Perl WebDyne Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability (CVE-2026-78190) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWebDyne versions from 2.014 before 3.022 for Perl
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary scripts in the context of the victim's browser session, leading to session hijacking or credential theft
Upgrade the WebDyne module to version 3.022 or later immediately
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The recommended remediation is to upgrade the WebDyne Perl module to version 3.022 or higher, where the escaping mechanism has been fully restored and fixed.
# Upgrade WebDyne using cpanm
cpanm WebDyne
# Alternatively, install the specific patched version from MetaCPAN
cpanm ASPEER/WebDyne-3.022.tar.gz2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, you can deploy temporary request filtering rules at the Web Application Firewall (WAF) or reverse proxy level to block common XSS payloads.
# Nginx configuration snippet to block basic XSS attempts in query strings
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com;
if ($args ~* '(<|%3C).*script.*(>|%3E)') {
return 403;
}
if ($args ~* '("|%22).*(\|%3C).*') {
return 403;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following commands to verify the installed WebDyne version and inspect web server access logs for potential exploitation attempts.
# 1. Check the currently installed WebDyne version
perl -MWebDyne -e 'print $WebDyne::VERSION . "\
"'
# 2. Scan Nginx/Apache access logs for XSS injection patterns
grep -Ei '(<script|%3Cscript|javascript:|onerror=|onload=)' /var/log/nginx/access.logScan Your Repositories for Transitive Vulnerable Dependencies in 30 Seconds

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-78190) is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in WebDyne, a Perl-based web framework. The root cause lies in how the textfield, password_field, and filefield tags handle user input. These tags populate their HTML value attribute directly from the corresponding HTTP request parameters without performing proper HTML entity escaping.
By default, the configuration parameter WEBDYNE_CGI_AUTOESCAPE, which controls the escaping of these values, is set to off. Furthermore, starting from version 2.022, a critical regression was introduced where WebDyne::HTML::Tiny replaced its entity_encode method with one that returns the input unmodified. Consequently, even if administrators explicitly enable WEBDYNE_CGI_AUTOESCAPE, escaping remains completely non-functional.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by crafting a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads targeted at the vulnerable form fields.
For instance, if a target application uses the textfield tag for a search or login parameter, an attacker can construct a link like: http://example.com/search?q='"><script>alert(document.domain)</script>
When a victim clicks this link, the WebDyne engine processes the request and renders the unescaped parameter directly into the HTML output: <input type='text' name='q' value=''><script>alert(document.domain)</script>'>
The victim's browser interprets the injected <script> tag as executable code, running it within the security context of the vulnerable domain.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 6.1 (Medium), this vulnerability poses a significant threat to web application integrity. If an administrative user is targeted, the attacker could hijack their active session, leading to unauthorized access to backend systems, data exfiltration, and potential compromise of the underlying application infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
WebDyne versions from 2.014 before 3.022 for Perl reflect request parameters unescaped into form field values, allowing cross-site scripting. The textfield, password_field and filefield tags fill their value attribute from the request parameter of the same name. WEBDYNE_CGI_AUTOESCAPE, which controls escaping of these values, defaults to off. From 2.022, WebDyne::HTML::Tiny also replaced its entity_encode method with one that returns its input unchanged, so enabling WEBDYNE_CGI_AUTOESCAPE has no effect. A remote attacker can inject script into any page using these tags through a crafted link.
