WebDyne Perl Module Session Cookie Missing Security Attributes Vulnerability (CVE-2026-78188)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWebDyne Perl module versions from 2.014 before 3.022
Session cookies lack Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite attributes, enabling session hijacking via network sniffing, XSS, or CSRF attacks
Immediately upgrade the WebDyne module to version 3.022 or later
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update the WebDyne Perl module to the patched version (3.022 or later) using CPAN or cpanm.
# Upgrade WebDyne module via CPAN shell
perl -MCPAN -e 'install ASPEER/WebDyne-3.022'
# Alternatively, use cpanm for a direct installation
cpanm WebDyne2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate module upgrade is not feasible, configure your reverse proxy (e.g., Nginx) to rewrite the Set-Cookie header and inject the missing security attributes.
# Nginx reverse proxy configuration workaround
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name app.example.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://backend_perl_app;
# Force Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite=Lax attributes on session cookies
proxy_cookie_path / '/; Secure; HttpOnly; SameSite=Lax';
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following Perl commands to verify the installed version of WebDyne and determine if the system is vulnerable.
# Check the currently installed WebDyne version
perl -MWebDyne -e 'print "Installed Version: $WebDyne::VERSION\
";' 2>/dev/null || echo 'WebDyne is not installed'
# Verify if the installed version is vulnerable (less than 3.022)
perl -MWebDyne -e 'if ($WebDyne::VERSION < 3.022) { print "[WARNING] Vulnerable WebDyne version detected: $WebDyne::VERSION\
"; exit 1; } else { print "[OK] Secure WebDyne version: $WebDyne::VERSION\
"; }' 2>/dev/nullScan Your Repositories for Transitive Vulnerable Dependencies in 30 Seconds

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-78188) exists in the WebDyne::Session component of the WebDyne Perl web framework. The root cause is the failure to apply standard security attributes when issuing session cookies. The module initializes session cookies containing only the name, value, and path. Consequently, critical security flags such as Secure (CWE-614), HttpOnly (CWE-1004), and SameSite (CWE-1275) are omitted from the HTTP response headers.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
The absence of these security attributes exposes the session cookies to multiple attack vectors:
- Session Hijacking via MITM: Without the
Secureattribute, browsers will transmit the session cookie over unencrypted HTTP connections. A network-level attacker can sniff the plaintext traffic to capture active session IDs. - Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Exploitation: Without the
HttpOnlyattribute, client-side scripts can access the cookie. If the application is vulnerable to XSS, an attacker can execute malicious JavaScript (document.cookie) to exfiltrate session tokens. - Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF): Without the
SameSiteattribute, browsers may attach the session cookie to cross-site requests, allowing malicious external sites to perform unauthorized actions on behalf of authenticated users.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Successful exploitation allows attackers to impersonate legitimate users and gain unauthorized access to the web application. If administrative sessions are compromised, this can lead to complete application takeover, sensitive data breaches, and unauthorized configuration changes, posing severe compliance and operational risks.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
WebDyne versions from 2.014 before 3.022 for Perl issue session cookies without the Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite attributes. WebDyne::Session sets its session cookie with only a name, value and path. Browsers then send the session ID over plain HTTP and with cross-site requests, and expose it to page scripts. A network attacker or an injected script can steal the session, and another site can make requests that carry it.
