WebDyne Perl Framework Source Code & Credentials Disclosure Vulnerability (CVE-2026-78192) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWebDyne versions from 2.022 before 3.022 for Perl
Unauthenticated remote attackers can read application source code (.psp, .pm, .pl) and extract hardcoded credentials via the default index page viewer
Immediately upgrade WebDyne to version 3.022 or later
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Upgrade the WebDyne framework to the patched version (3.022 or later) using CPAN.
# Upgrade WebDyne via CPAN
perl -MCPAN -e 'install WebDyne'
# Alternatively, using cpanminus
cpanm --upgrade WebDyne2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, disable the default index page in your wrapper script (e.g., webdyne.psgi) or block access to the source viewer via a reverse proxy like Nginx.
# Nginx configuration to block malicious source parameter requests
server {
listen 80;
server_name yourdomain.com;
# Block requests attempting to read source files via query parameters
if ($args ~* 'source=.*\.(psp|pm|pl)') {
return 403;
}
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:5000;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the currently installed WebDyne version and inspect access logs for potential exploitation attempts.
# 1. Check the installed WebDyne version
perl -MWebDyne -e 'print $WebDyne::VERSION;'
# 2. Scan web server access logs for source disclosure attempts
grep -Ei 'source=.*\.(psp|pm|pl)' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/httpd/access_logBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-78192) is a critical security flaw arising from insecure default configurations (CWE-1188) and sensitive information disclosure (CWE-540) in the WebDyne Perl web framework. By default, WebDyne's wrapper scripts, such as webdyne.psgi, enable a built-in index page. The source viewer component within this default index page fails to properly restrict file access, returning files under the document root based on the source parameter of an HTMX request.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTMX request to the target application. By manipulating the source parameter to point to sensitive application files, the attacker can force the server to return the raw contents of .psp, .pm, and .pl files. This allows the attacker to view the raw Perl code, including the __PERL__ blocks of .psp pages, which often contain sensitive business logic and hardcoded credentials.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Exposure of the application's source code compromises intellectual property and allows attackers to conduct offline white-box analysis to discover further vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the exposure of hardcoded credentials (such as database passwords or API keys) can lead to unauthorized database access, lateral movement within the infrastructure, and full system compromise.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
WebDyne versions from 2.022 before 3.022 for Perl disclose application source to unauthenticated clients via the viewer in the default index page. WebDyne's wrapper scripts, such as webdyne.psgi, enable the built-in index page by default. Its source viewer returns files under the document root named in the source parameter of an HTMX request, including .psp, .pm and .pl files. A remote attacker can read the application's Perl code, including the __PERL__ blocks of .psp pages and any credentials they hold.
