WebDyne Perl Framework Path Traversal and Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability Advisory (CVE-2026-78189)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTPerl web applications utilizing WebDyne versions 3.007 through 3.021
Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary Perl code via path traversal, leading to full system compromise
Immediately upgrade WebDyne to version 3.022 or higher, and restrict script execution in upload directories
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update the WebDyne module to the latest secure version (3.022 or higher) via CPAN immediately.
# Upgrade WebDyne using CPAN shell
perl -MCPAN -e 'install ASPEER/WebDyne-3.022'
# Alternatively, using cpanm (App::cpanminus)
cpanm WebDyne@3.0222. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, configure your reverse proxy (e.g., Nginx) to block directory traversal sequences and restrict execution of .psp files in public directories.
# Nginx configuration to block traversal attempts and restrict .psp execution
server {
listen 80;
server_name your-webdyne-app.com;
# Block directory traversal attempts
if ($request_uri ~* '\.\./') {
return 400 'Bad Request: Path Traversal Attempt Blocked';
}
# Prevent execution of .psp files in upload directories
location ~* ^/uploads/.*\.psp$ {
deny all;
return 403;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the currently installed WebDyne version and scan web server access logs for potential exploitation attempts.
# 1. Check the installed WebDyne version
perl -MWebDyne -e 'print $WebDyne::VERSION;'
# 2. Scan access logs for path traversal attempts targeting .psp files
grep -Ei '\.\./.*\.psp' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/httpd/access_logBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-78189) is a critical path traversal and remote code execution (RCE) flaw in WebDyne, a Perl-based web application framework. The root cause lies within the PSGI handler's fallback mechanism (api_filename). When an incoming HTTP request does not match any existing file in the document root, the handler retries the request as an API route. During this fallback process, the handler fails to sanitize or normalize directory traversal sequences (..) from the request path. It only validates whether the resolved path starts with the document root, allowing crafted requests containing traversal sequences (e.g., /../private) to bypass the security check.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by first uploading a malicious .psp (Perl Server Pages) file containing arbitrary Perl code to a directory outside the document root (such as a temporary or user upload directory). The attacker then sends a crafted HTTP request containing directory traversal sequences, such as http://target/../uploads/malicious.psp. Because the PSGI handler retains the .. segments during the fallback routing, it resolves the path to the uploaded file outside the document root and executes the embedded Perl code under the privileges of the web server process.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8 (Critical), this vulnerability poses an extreme risk to infrastructure. An unauthenticated remote attacker can achieve arbitrary code execution (RCE) without any user interaction. Successful exploitation can lead to complete compromise of the host operating system, unauthorized access to sensitive databases, lateral movement within the internal network, and deployment of ransomware.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
WebDyne versions from 3.007 before 3.022 for Perl execute .psp files outside the document root via path traversal in the PSGI API route fallback. When a request matches no file, the PSGI handler retries it as an API route through api_filename. That keeps .. segments in the request path and only checks that the joined path starts with the document root, which a request for /../private passes. A remote attacker can run the embedded Perl in any .psp file the server can read, such as one uploaded to a directory outside the document root.
