Apache Kylin REST API Remote Code Execution (RCE) and OS Command Injection Vulnerability Analysis (CVE-2020-1956)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTApache Kylin versions 2.3.0 through 2.6.5, and version 3.0.1
Authenticated attackers can exploit the lack of input validation to execute arbitrary OS commands and gain full control over the hosting server
Immediately upgrade to Apache Kylin 2.6.6, 3.0.2, or later, or apply configuration workarounds to disable vulnerable features
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The recommended remediation is to upgrade Apache Kylin to version 2.6.6, 3.0.2, or higher. Below are the commands to stop the vulnerable instance and deploy the patched version.
# 1. Stop the currently running vulnerable Kylin service
$KYLIN_HOME/bin/kylin.sh stop
# 2. Download and extract the secure version (e.g., 3.0.2+)
wget https://archive.apache.org/dist/kylin/apache-kylin-3.0.2/apache-kylin-3.0.2-bin-hbase1x.tar.gz
tar -zxvf apache-kylin-3.0.2-bin-hbase1x.tar.gz
# 3. Migrate configuration and start the new secure instance
cp $OLD_KYLIN_HOME/conf/kylin.properties $NEW_KYLIN_HOME/conf/
$NEW_KYLIN_HOME/bin/kylin.sh start2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, mitigate the risk by disabling vulnerable features and parameters in the kylin.properties configuration file.
# Open kylin.properties and disable auto-migration and ad-hoc command execution features
kylin.tool.auto-migrate-cube.enabled=false
kylin.job.use-ad-hoc-engine=false3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following commands to inspect the Kylin logs (kylin.log) for potential exploitation attempts containing shell metacharacters in API requests.
# Scan Kylin logs for suspicious shell metacharacters within REST API request contexts
grep -Ei '(/api/cubes|/api/projects|/api/config)' $KYLIN_HOME/logs/kylin.log | grep -E '(&&|\||;|\`|\$)'
# Verify the currently running Apache Kylin version via API
curl -s -u ADMIN:KYLIN http://localhost:7070/kylin/api/admin/public_config | grep -oP '"kylin.version":"[^"]+"'Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2020-1956) is a critical OS command injection flaw residing in the REST API endpoints of Apache Kylin. The root cause lies in the unsafe concatenation of user-supplied input strings directly into operating system command executions within certain system configuration and migration APIs. Because the input is not properly sanitized or validated against a strict allowlist, attackers can inject shell metacharacters to execute arbitrary system commands under the privileges of the Kylin process.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first authenticate to the Apache Kylin web console or API (often leveraging default credentials like ADMIN/KYLIN if left unchanged). Once authenticated, the attacker sends a crafted HTTP POST or PUT request to vulnerable REST endpoints, such as those managing Cube or Project configurations. By injecting shell control operators (e.g., &&, |, ;) into parameters like kylin.engine.spark-conf or migration script paths, the attacker forces the underlying operating system to execute arbitrary payloads, such as downloading and executing a malicious shell script.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 8.8 (High) and its inclusion in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, this vulnerability poses a severe threat and is actively targeted in the wild. Successful exploitation grants the attacker shell access to the server hosting Apache Kylin. This can serve as an entry point for lateral movement into critical big data clusters (Hadoop, Spark), leading to massive data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, or unauthorized resource utilization such as cryptomining.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Apache Kylin 2.3.0, and releases up to 2.6.5 and 3.0.1 has some restful apis which will concatenate os command with the user input string, a user is likely to be able to execute any os command without any protection or validation.
