Apache Tomcat EncryptInterceptor Bypass and Sensitive Data Exposure Vulnerability (CVE-2026-34486)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTApache Tomcat versions 11.0.20, 10.1.53, and 9.0.116 utilizing clustering with EncryptInterceptor enabled
Incomplete fix for CVE-2026-29146 allows attackers to bypass the EncryptInterceptor, leading to the transmission of sensitive session data in plaintext across the network
Immediately upgrade to patched Apache Tomcat versions 11.0.21, 10.1.54, or 9.0.117
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch Application (Recommended)
Upgrade to the secure releases as advised by the Apache Tomcat security team:
- Tomcat 11.x Users: Upgrade to
11.0.21or later - Tomcat 10.x Users: Upgrade to
10.1.54or later - Tomcat 9.x Users: Upgrade to
9.0.117or later
2. Temporary Mitigations
If upgrading immediately is not feasible, implement the following network-level controls:
- Network Segmentation & IPsec:
Isolate the Tomcat clustering traffic (typically port 4000 or custom membership ports) to a dedicated, secure VLAN. Implement IPsec at the OS level to encrypt all inter-node traffic independently of Tomcat's application-level encryption.
- Firewall Access Control (iptables example):
# Restrict clustering port access to trusted cluster nodes only
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 4000 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 4000 -j DROPBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability arises from a flaw in Apache Tomcat's clustering component, specifically within the EncryptInterceptor which is designed to secure communication between cluster nodes.
A regression or incomplete fix introduced during the remediation of CVE-2026-29146 allows an attacker to bypass the encryption enforcement mechanism. Consequently, sensitive cluster messages—such as session replication data, authentication tokens, and application-specific payloads—are transmitted in unencrypted plaintext (CWE-311).
An attacker capable of intercepting network traffic within the cluster's network segment can capture these plaintext transmissions, leading to session hijacking, credential theft, and potential lateral movement. Given that this vulnerability is listed on the CISA KEV catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild, immediate remediation is highly critical.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Missing Encryption of Sensitive Data vulnerability in Apache Tomcat due to the fix for CVE-2026-29146 allowing the bypass of the EncryptInterceptor. This issue affects Apache Tomcat: 11.0.20, 10.1.53, 9.0.116. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 11.0.21, 10.1.54 or 9.0.117, which fix the issue.
