Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWAVLINK WN701AE router with firmware version 260105 and prior
Remote authenticated attackers can execute arbitrary OS commands with administrative privileges, leading to complete device compromise
Restrict external access to the web management interface, filter input parameters for VLAN configuration APIs, or apply the latest firmware updates
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Verify if a patched firmware version has been released by WAVLINK and upgrade the device immediately. Below is an example script to download and apply the firmware via CLI:
# Download the latest secure firmware (verify the official URL from the vendor)
wget http://firmware.wavlink.com/wn701ae/latest_firmware.bin -O /tmp/firmware.bin
# Verify firmware integrity using SHA256 checksum
echo 'EXPECTED_SHA256_HASH_HERE /tmp/firmware.bin' | sha256sum -c -
# Execute the system upgrade utility
sysupgrade -v /tmp/firmware.bin2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, disable WAN-side access to the web management interface and restrict access to trusted administrator IP addresses using firewall rules:
# Block external access to web management ports (80, 443) on the WAN interface (e.g., eth0)
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP
# Allow access only from a trusted administrator IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100)
iptables -I INPUT -s 192.168.1.100 -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I INPUT -s 192.168.1.100 -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect the web server access logs for suspicious patterns containing shell metacharacters in requests targeting the del_vlan_group endpoint:
# Search for suspicious command injection patterns in web server access logs
grep -E 'del_vlan_group.*(;|%3B|&|%26|\||%7C|\`|%60|\$)' /var/log/lighttpd/access.log /var/log/nginx/access.log 2>/dev/null
# Monitor active processes for unexpected shell executions
ps w | grep -E '(sh|bash|ash|zsh) -c'Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-120230) exists in the del_vlan_group function of the 'ioos' web backend component in WAVLINK WN701AE routers. Due to insufficient input validation and sanitization of the vlan_name parameter, the application directly concatenates user-supplied input into system shell commands, resulting in an OS Command Injection vulnerability (CWE-78).
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker with low-privilege access (PR:L) can send a crafted HTTP request to the vulnerable VLAN deletion API endpoint. By appending shell metacharacters such as semicolons (;), ampersands (&), or backticks (` `) followed by malicious commands within the vlan_name` parameter, the attacker forces the underlying operating system to execute arbitrary commands. This allows the attacker to establish a reverse shell or download and execute malicious payloads.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
If the affected router is deployed within an enterprise perimeter or internal network, a successful compromise allows attackers to perform lateral movement, sniff internal network traffic, or alter DNS settings to redirect users to malicious sites. Furthermore, compromised devices are highly susceptible to being recruited into IoT botnets for launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A vulnerability was found in WAVLINK WN701AE 260105. Impacted is the function del_vlan_group of the component ioos Web Backend. The manipulation of the argument vlan_name results in os command injection. The attack may be performed from remote. The exploit has been made public and could be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure.
