WAVLINK WL-WN579A3-A Router Initial Setup Wizard Remote Command Injection Vulnerability (CVE-2026-120195) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWAVLINK WL-WN579A3-A firmware version 2026-03-10-94f93d4 and prior.
Unauthenticated remote attackers can inject malicious OS commands to gain full root-level control over the device and compromise the internal network.
Disable remote WAN management, restrict access to the administration interface, and monitor network traffic for suspicious CGI requests.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
As a vendor patch may not be immediately available, administrators should monitor the official WAVLINK support portal for firmware updates. If an update is released, apply it immediately via the router's administration panel.
2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
To mitigate the risk immediately, disable remote management from the WAN side and restrict LAN-side access to trusted administrative hosts only. Use the following iptables rules on an upstream gateway or local firewall to block unauthorized access:
# Block all external WAN access to the router's web interface
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP
# Restrict internal access to a specific administrator IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100)
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.100 --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Deploy the following Snort/Suricata signature to detect incoming exploitation attempts targeting the vulnerable CGI endpoint:
# Snort/Suricata rule to detect exploitation attempts
alert tcp any any -> any 80 (msg:'WAVLINK WL-WN579A3-A Command Injection Attempt'; content:'POST'; http_method; content:'/cgi-bin/adm.cgi'; http_uri; content:'set_wzdgwMesh'; http_client_body; pcre:'/wlan_ssid=[^&]*[;`|]/P'; sid:1000001; rev:1;)Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
A critical security vulnerability has been identified in the Initial Setup Wizard component of the WAVLINK WL-WN579A3-A wireless router. The vulnerability resides within the set_wzdgwMesh function of the /cgi-bin/adm.cgi script. Due to insufficient input validation and sanitization of the wlan_ssid parameter, user-supplied input is directly concatenated into a system shell command execution context, leading to OS command injection (CWE-78/CWE-77).
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely by sending a crafted HTTP POST request to /cgi-bin/adm.cgi. By embedding shell metacharacters (such as ;, &, or ` `) within the wlan_ssid` parameter, the attacker can append arbitrary OS commands. Since the web server executes these CGI scripts with root privileges, the injected commands are executed immediately, allowing the attacker to establish a reverse shell, download malware, or join the device to a botnet.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 10.0, this vulnerability poses an extreme risk. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the router. Attackers can intercept local network traffic, perform DNS hijacking, or use the compromised device as a pivot point to launch lateral movement attacks against other critical assets within the internal corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A security vulnerability has been detected in WAVLINK WL-WN579A3-A 2026-03-10-94f93d4. The impacted element is the function set_wzdgwMesh of the file /cgi-bin/adm.cgi of the component Initial Setup Wizard. The manipulation of the argument wlan_ssid leads to os command injection. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. The exploit has been disclosed publicly and may be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure.
