Cisco ASA and FTD Software Local Privilege Escalation and Persistent Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2024-20359)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software
An authenticated, local attacker with administrator privileges can execute arbitrary code with root-level privileges and establish persistence across device reboots by preloading crafted files
Apply the official security updates provided by Cisco immediately and audit the flash file system for unauthorized files
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Upgrade your Cisco ASA/FTD software to a patched release. Below is an example of upgrading the ASA image via CLI.
# Download the secure patched ASA image from a trusted TFTP server
copy tftp://10.1.1.100/asa918-4-lts.spa disk0:/asa918-4-lts.spa
# Update the boot system path and save configuration
no boot system disk0:/asa-old.spa
boot system disk0:/asa918-4-lts.spa
write memory
# Reload the device to apply the patch
reload2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not possible, restrict administrative access (HTTPS/SSH) to trusted management networks only to minimize the attack surface.
# Restrict SSH and HTTPS access to the dedicated management subnet
no http 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 inside
no ssh 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 inside
http 10.10.99.0 255.255.255.0 inside
ssh 10.10.99.0 255.255.255.0 inside
write memory3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect the flash file system for unauthorized or suspicious files (such as unexpected .bin, .so, or .zip files) and verify the running version.
# Verify the currently running software version
show version | grep -i 'Software'
# List files in disk0: to identify unauthorized modifications
show flash:
# Or inspect the directory structure
dir disk0:/Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2024-20359) exists in a legacy capability designed for preloading VPN clients and plug-ins within Cisco ASA and FTD Software. The root cause is the improper validation of files when they are read from the system flash memory (disk0:). An attacker can exploit this by placing a crafted file into the file system, which the software subsequently loads without proper integrity verification.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first obtain administrator-level privileges on the target device. The attacker copies a malicious, specially crafted file to the disk0: file system. Upon the next system reload or reboot, the vulnerable preloading mechanism reads and executes the file. Because the injected code runs with root-level privileges and persists across reboots, it allows the attacker to maintain permanent, undetected access to the device.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild by sophisticated threat actors (e.g., the ArcaneDoor campaign) targeting perimeter network devices. Successful exploitation compromises the integrity of the firewall/VPN gateway, potentially allowing attackers to intercept network traffic, perform lateral movement within the internal network, and bypass critical security controls.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A vulnerability in a legacy capability that allowed for the preloading of VPN clients and plug-ins and that has been available in Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to execute arbitrary code with root-level privileges. Administrator-level privileges are required to exploit this vulnerability. This vulnerability is due to improper validation of a file when it is read from system flash memory. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by copying a crafted file to the disk0: file system of an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected device after the next reload of the device, which could alter system behavior. Because the injected code could persist across device reboots, Cisco has raised the Security Impact Rating (SIR) of this advisory from Medium to High.
