Cisco ASA and FTD SSL VPN Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (CVE-2026-20349)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco Secure Firewall ASA and FTD Software with Remote Access SSL VPN service enabled
Unauthenticated, remote attackers can cause an unexpected device reload, leading to a complete Denial of Service (DoS) condition
Immediately upgrade to the patched software versions recommended in the Cisco Security Advisory
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Patches
Refer to the Cisco Security Advisory (cisco-sa-asaftd-vpn-dos-dzv4mQFF) and upgrade to the designated fixed release for your software train.
2. Temporary Mitigations & Monitoring
If immediate patching is not feasible, implement the following defensive measures:
- Access Control Lists (ACLs): Restrict access to the SSL VPN gateway port (typically TCP 443) to authorized or geofenced IP ranges only.
- IPS/WAF Signatures: Deploy signatures on upstream security devices to detect and block malformed or anomalous HTTP requests targeting the SSL VPN endpoint.
- Log Analysis: Monitor ASA/FTD syslog messages for unexpected reloads and inspect crash dumps.

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-20349) exists in the Remote Access SSL VPN service of Cisco Secure Firewall ASA (Adaptive Security Appliance) and FTD (Threat Defense) Software.
Root Cause & Exploit Mechanics (CWE-244)
The vulnerability stems from insufficient error checking when the SSL VPN daemon processes incoming HTTP requests. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted HTTP request to the SSL VPN interface. Due to the lack of robust input validation and error handling, this crafted request triggers an unhandled exception or memory fault, forcing the firewall's operating system to crash and reload unexpectedly.
Threat Intelligence & Impact Assessment
- CVSS 8.6 (High): Requires no authentication (PR:N), has low attack complexity (AC:L), and is remotely exploitable (AV:N).
- CISA KEV & High EPSS: This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. With an EPSS score of 0.94, it represents an immediate threat to enterprise perimeter security, as firewall reloads disrupt all transit traffic and VPN tunnels.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A vulnerability in the Remote Access SSL VPN service for Cisco Secure Firewall Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the device to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. This vulnerability is due to insufficient error checking when processing HTTP requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to the Remote Access SSL VPN service on an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to reload, resulting in a DoS condition.
