Google Chrome Mojo IPC Insufficient Data Validation Sandbox Escape Vulnerability (CVE-2022-3075)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTGoogle Chrome and Chromium-based browsers prior to version 105.0.5195.102
A remote attacker who has compromised the renderer process can bypass the browser sandbox and potentially execute arbitrary code on the host system via crafted Mojo IPC messages
Immediately update Google Chrome and all Chromium-based browsers to version 105.0.5195.102 or later
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
To upgrade Google Chrome to the patched version on Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux systems, execute the following commands:
# Update package repositories and upgrade Google Chrome
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y
# Verify that the installed version is 105.0.5195.102 or higher
google-chrome --version2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce strict site isolation policies via registry settings on Windows endpoints to mitigate renderer-to-renderer compromise vectors.
# Enforce Site Isolation policy via Windows Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google' -Name 'Chrome' -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'SitePerProcess' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following shell script to audit enterprise Linux endpoints and identify vulnerable installations of Google Chrome:
#!/bin/bash
# Audit script to detect vulnerable Google Chrome installations
if command -v google-chrome &> /dev/null; then
CURRENT_VER=$(google-chrome --version | awk '{print $3}')
SAFE_VER='105.0.5195.102'
if [ '$(printf "%s\
%s" "$SAFE_VER" "$CURRENT_VER" | sort -V | head -n1)' != "$SAFE_VER" ]; then
echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable Chrome version detected: '$CURRENT_VER
else
echo '[OK] Chrome version is secure: '$CURRENT_VER
fi
else
echo '[INFO] Google Chrome is not installed on this system.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2022-3075) is an insufficient data validation issue (CWE-20) within the Mojo IPC (Inter-Process Communication) framework of Google Chrome. Chromium's architecture relies on isolating untrusted renderer processes inside a sandbox. To perform privileged operations, these renderers communicate with the browser process via Mojo. Due to inadequate validation of incoming Mojo messages, a compromised renderer process can send malformed data that triggers memory corruption or logical flaws in the browser process.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first compromise the renderer process, typically by exploiting a separate rendering engine vulnerability via a malicious web page. Once control over the renderer is established, the attacker sends specially crafted Mojo IPC messages to the browser process. Because the browser process fails to properly validate this input, the attacker can trigger out-of-bounds behavior, escaping the sandbox boundaries and executing arbitrary code with the privileges of the browser process on the host OS.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the user's workstation upon visiting a malicious website. This poses a severe threat to enterprise environments, potentially leading to initial access for ransomware deployment, credential theft, and lateral movement within internal networks.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Insufficient data validation in Mojo in Google Chrome prior to 105.0.5195.102 allowed a remote attacker who had compromised the renderer process to potentially perform a sandbox escape via a crafted HTML page.
