Google Chrome Dawn Use-After-Free Vulnerability (CVE-2026-5281) Technical Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTGoogle Chrome versions prior to 146.0.7680.178
A remote attacker who has compromised the renderer process can execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML page
Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (146.0.7680.178 or higher)
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patch
The primary remediation is to update Google Chrome to the latest patched version.
- Manual Update (Desktop):
- Open Chrome and click the
three dotsmenu in the top right corner. - Navigate to
Help->About Google Chrome. - Chrome will automatically check for updates and install them. Click
Relaunchto complete the process.
2. Enterprise Group Policy (GPO) Enforcement
For enterprise environments, enforce automatic updates to prevent users from delaying critical security patches.
- Windows Registry Configuration:
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update" /v UpdateDefault /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update" /v AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes /t REG_DWORD /d 60 /f3. Temporary Mitigation (Disable WebGPU)
If immediate patching is not feasible, mitigate the attack vector by disabling WebGPU via command-line flags:
- Launch Chrome with the following parameter:
--disable-features=WebGPU
Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-5281) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw within Dawn, the WebGPU implementation engine utilized in Google Chrome.
An attacker who has already compromised the renderer process can trigger this vulnerability by enticing a user to visit a specially crafted HTML page. By manipulating the lifecycle of memory objects within the Dawn engine, the attacker can reference memory that has already been freed, leading to arbitrary code execution (RCE) or a complete browser crash (Denial of Service).
With a CVSS score of 8.8 and an EPSS score of 0.94, this vulnerability is highly critical. It has been added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild. Immediate remediation is strongly advised.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Use after free in Dawn in Google Chrome prior to 146.0.7680.178 allowed a remote attacker who had compromised the renderer process to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: High)
