Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

All GitLab Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE) versions starting from 11.9

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary system commands with the privileges of the GitLab user by uploading a specially crafted image file

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade the GitLab instance to the latest patched versions (13.10.3, 13.9.6, 13.8.8, or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

All GitLab CE/EE versions starting from 11.9 up to the patched releases (prior to 13.8.8, 13.9.6, and 13.10.3)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official security patches immediately. Below are the commands to upgrade GitLab on Ubuntu/Debian-based systems.

bash
# Update package repositories and upgrade GitLab CE to the latest secure version
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade gitlab-ce -y

# Verify the service status and installed version
sudo gitlab-ctl status
sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:env:info

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict external access to the vulnerable upload endpoints using a reverse proxy such as Nginx.

nginx
# Block unauthenticated upload endpoints in Nginx configuration
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name gitlab.example.com;

    location ~* ^/uploads/user {
        deny all;
        return 403;
    }

    location ~* ^/api/v4/projects/[0-9]+/uploads {
        deny all;
        return 403;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Inspect GitLab application logs for suspicious unauthenticated upload attempts and anomalous child processes.

bash
# Search for suspicious upload requests in the GitLab production log
sudo grep -E 'POST .*/uploads' /var/log/gitlab/gitlab-rails/production.log | grep -v '200 OK'

# Check for unexpected child processes running under the 'git' user
ps auxf | grep -A 3 'git'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the way GitLab CE/EE processes metadata of uploaded image files. GitLab utilizes the ExifTool library internally for parsing image file metadata. When ExifTool parses metadata within the DjVu file format, it fails to properly validate and escape user-supplied input, leading to an arbitrary Perl code injection (CWE-94) that executes system commands.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker crafts a malicious payload embedded within a DjVu structure disguised inside a valid JPEG or PNG file. Because GitLab's file upload endpoints (such as '/uploads/user') are accessible to unauthenticated users, an attacker can trigger the vulnerability remotely without any valid session tokens or credentials, leading to immediate Remote Code Execution (RCE).

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 10.0, this is a critical vulnerability actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Successful exploitation grants the attacker full control over the 'git' user account on the host operating system, enabling source code theft, CI/CD pipeline compromise (Supply Chain Attack), lateral movement within the internal network, and potential deployment of ransomware.
