Apache Solr DataImportHandler Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability Analysis and Mitigation Guide (CVE-2019-0193)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTApache Solr versions prior to 8.2.0 with the DataImportHandler (DIH) module enabled
An authenticated attacker (or an attacker with admin access) can execute arbitrary system commands on the host server by sending a malicious DIH configuration
Upgrade Apache Solr to version 8.2.0 or higher, or explicitly disable the 'enable.dih.dataConfigParam' Java system property
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The recommended remediation is to upgrade Apache Solr to version 8.2.0 or later. Starting with version 8.2.0, the use of the 'dataConfig' parameter is disabled by default and requires explicitly setting the Java system property 'enable.dih.dataConfigParam' to true.
# Example: Upgrade Solr on Debian/Ubuntu systems
# Download and run the official installation script for version 8.2.0
wget https://archive.apache.org/dist/lucene/solr/8.2.0/solr-8.2.0.tgz
tar xzf solr-8.2.0.tgz solr-8.2.0/bin/install_solr_service.sh --strip-components=2
sudo ./install_solr_service.sh solr-8.2.0.tgz -u solr2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, you must explicitly disable the vulnerable parameter by configuring the Solr environment variables.
# Append the disabling property to the solr.in.sh configuration file
echo "SOLR_OPTS=\"$SOLR_OPTS -Denable.dih.dataConfigParam=false\"" >> /etc/default/solr.in.sh
# Restart the Solr service to apply changes
sudo systemctl restart solr3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following commands to inspect Solr logs for potential exploitation attempts and verify the current configuration status.
# Search Solr logs for suspicious requests containing 'dataConfig' or script execution attempts
grep -Ei 'dataConfig|script|java.lang.Runtime' /var/solr/logs/solr.log
# Verify if the vulnerable DIH parameter is explicitly disabled in the running process
ps aux | grep solr | grep -i 'enable.dih.dataConfigParam'Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
Apache Solr's DataImportHandler (DIH) is an optional but widely used module designed to import data from databases and other external sources. To facilitate debugging and development, the DIH admin interface allows the entire DIH configuration to be supplied directly via the 'dataConfig' parameter in an HTTP request. Because DIH configurations can contain scripts (e.g., JavaScript for data transformation) and lack proper input validation or sandboxing, this parameter poses a severe security risk (CWE-94), allowing arbitrary code execution within the context of the Solr server process.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker with access to the Solr Admin UI or the API endpoints can exploit this vulnerability by performing the following steps:
- The attacker identifies an active Solr core and targets its '/solr/[core_name]/dataimport' endpoint.
- A POST request is crafted with parameters such as 'command=full-import', 'debug=true', and 'dataConfig'.
- Inside the 'dataConfig' parameter, the attacker embeds a '<script>' tag containing malicious JavaScript that invokes Java APIs, such as 'java.lang.Runtime.getRuntime().exec()', to execute OS commands.
- Upon receiving the request, the Solr server parses and executes the script, resulting in remote code execution on the underlying operating system.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is highly critical and is actively exploited in the wild (listed in CISA KEV). Successful exploitation grants the attacker shell access with the privileges of the Solr process owner. This can lead to full system compromise, credential theft, lateral movement within the internal network, data exfiltration, and deployment of ransomware or cryptocurrency miners, severely impacting business continuity.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
In Apache Solr, the DataImportHandler, an optional but popular module to pull in data from databases and other sources, has a feature in which the whole DIH configuration can come from a request's "dataConfig" parameter. The debug mode of the DIH admin screen uses this to allow convenient debugging / development of a DIH config. Since a DIH config can contain scripts, this parameter is a security risk. Starting with version 8.2.0 of Solr, use of this parameter requires setting the Java System property "enable.dih.dataConfigParam" to true.
