Apache MINA 3.0 JavaNativeMessageDecoder Deserialization Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2026-118636)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTInactive Apache MINA 3.0.0 branch and applications utilizing its codec module
Unrestricted Remote Code Execution (RCE) via gadget chains due to unfiltered deserialization of frame bytes from untrusted peers
Decommission the unsupported 3.0.0 branch and migrate to the actively maintained Apache MINA 2.2.X branch
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since the Apache MINA 3.0.0 branch is inactive and unsupported, users must migrate to the latest stable 2.2.X branch. Update your build configuration files as shown below:
<!-- Maven pom.xml Dependency Update -->
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.mina</groupId>
<artifactId>mina-core</artifactId>
<version>2.2.3</version> <!-- Upgrade to the latest secure version -->
</dependency>// Gradle build.gradle Dependency Update
implementation 'org.apache.mina:mina-core:2.2.3'2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate migration is not feasible, restrict network access to the MINA service port or replace the use of JavaNativeMessageDecoder with a secure custom decoder.
# Restrict access to the MINA port (e.g., 8080) to trusted IPs only using iptables
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8080 -s 192.168.1.100 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8080 -j DROP3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Scan your environment for the presence of the vulnerable MINA 3.0 library and inspect application logs for deserialization anomalies.
# Search for vulnerable MINA 3.0 JAR files in the project directory
find . -name '*mina*.jar' | grep '3.0'
# Audit application logs for potential deserialization errors or gadget execution traces
grep -ri 'java.io.ObjectInputStream' /var/log/apps/
grep -ri 'ClassNotFoundException' /var/log/apps/Scan Your Repositories for Transitive Vulnerable Dependencies in 30 Seconds

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability resides within the JavaNativeMessageDecoder class of the Apache MINA 3.0 codec module. When processing incoming network frame bytes, the decoder directly invokes Java's native ObjectInputStream.readObject() without implementing any class filtering mechanisms. This allows untrusted serialized object data to be instantiated in memory without validation.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can identify available gadget chains (such as those in Commons Collections or Spring) within the target application's classpath. By crafting a malicious serialized payload and transmitting it over the network to the MINA 3.0 socket, the attacker triggers the JavaNativeMessageDecoder. Since there is no whitelist or filter applied during readObject(), the payload is deserialized, executing the gadget chain and granting the attacker arbitrary system command execution (RCE).
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical), this vulnerability poses an extreme risk. An unauthenticated remote attacker can gain full control over the host running the vulnerable application. Because the 3.0.0 branch is officially inactive and will not receive security patches, continuing to run this version exposes the infrastructure to permanent zero-day exploitation, potentially leading to data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, and lateral movement.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
**UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED** JavaNativeMessageDecoder in the MINA 3.0 codec module calls ObjectInputStream.readObject() on frame bytes with no class filter, so an application that puts it in front of an untrusted peer is open to gadget-chain RCE. As the 3.0.0 branch is inactive, we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to use the latest Apache MINA 2.2.X branch.
