Appsmith Unauthenticated Edit-Mode Action Execution and Data Exposure Vulnerability (CVE-2026-24042)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAppsmith versions 1.94 and below with publicly accessible applications
Unauthenticated attackers can execute unpublished (edit-mode) actions, leading to sensitive data exposure, unauthorized database queries, and side-effect behaviors
Restrict public access to applications and implement request filtering on reverse proxies or WAFs to block unauthorized edit-mode execution requests
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
An official patch has not been released at the time of publication. Once the patch is available, immediately upgrade your Appsmith deployment using the following commands:
# Upgrade Appsmith container to the latest secure version
docker-compose pull && docker-compose up -d2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
Until a patch is released, mitigate the risk by disabling public access to your Appsmith applications and configuring a reverse proxy (e.g., Nginx) or WAF to block unauthorized requests containing viewMode=false to the action execution endpoint.
# Nginx configuration to block unauthorized edit-mode execution attempts
server {
listen 80;
server_name appsmith.yourdomain.com;
location /api/v1/actions/execute {
# Block requests attempting to force edit-mode execution
if ($args ~* 'viewMode=false') {
return 403 'Forbidden: Unauthorized edit-mode execution attempt';
}
proxy_pass http://appsmith-internal:8080;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Audit your Appsmith container logs to identify potential exploitation attempts targeting the action execution endpoint.
# Search Appsmith logs for suspicious action execution requests
docker logs appsmith | grep '/api/v1/actions/execute' | grep -i 'viewMode'Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-24042) is a critical broken access control issue (CWE-862) in Appsmith, a popular low-code platform for building internal tools. Appsmith maintains a strict boundary between 'Edit-mode' (development) and 'Published-mode' (production). However, in affected versions, the API endpoint POST /api/v1/actions/execute fails to properly validate authorization boundaries for publicly accessible applications.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An unauthenticated attacker can access a public Appsmith application and send a crafted request to POST /api/v1/actions/execute. By explicitly setting the parameter viewMode=false or omitting it entirely, the backend processes the request under the context of the unpublished edit-mode version rather than the published version. This allows the attacker to trigger development-stage queries, draft APIs, and administrative actions that were never intended to be exposed to the public.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to severe data breaches, as attackers can execute arbitrary database queries configured in edit-mode. This exposes sensitive backend credentials, internal API keys, and proprietary business data. Furthermore, since edit-mode actions may include write operations, attackers could modify or delete critical infrastructure data, posing a severe threat to business continuity. This vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical).
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Appsmith is a platform to build admin panels, internal tools, and dashboards. In versions 1.94 and below, publicly accessible apps allow unauthenticated users to execute unpublished (edit-mode) actions by sending viewMode=false (or omitting it) to POST /api/v1/actions/execute. This bypasses the expected publish boundary where public viewers should only execute published actions, not edit-mode versions. An attack can result in sensitive data exposure, execution of edit‑mode queries and APIs, development data access, and the ability to trigger side effect behavior. This issue does not have a released fix at the time of publication.
