GuardDog CLI Path Traversal Vulnerability Leading to Arbitrary File Overwrite and Remote Code Execution (CVE-2026-22871)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAll systems and CI/CD pipelines running GuardDog versions prior to 2.7.1
Malicious PyPI packages can exploit path traversal to write arbitrary files outside the extraction directory, leading to Arbitrary File Overwrite and Remote Code Execution (RCE)
Immediately upgrade GuardDog to version 2.7.1 or higher
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
GuardDog has released version 2.7.1 to address this vulnerability. Upgrade your installation immediately using your package manager.
# Upgrade GuardDog using pip
pip install --upgrade guarddog
# Or enforce the minimum secure version\pip install 'guarddog>=2.7.1'
# Upgrade using Poetry
poetry add guarddog@latest2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, mitigate the risk by running GuardDog within a highly restricted, non-root container environment to limit the impact of arbitrary file writes.
# Example of running GuardDog as a non-root user in Docker
FROM python:3.10-slim
RUN useradd -m guarddog_user
USER guarddog_user
WORKDIR /home/guarddog_user
RUN pip install --user guarddog==2.7.0
# Ensure the container has no write access to critical host directories3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following script to check the installed GuardDog version and verify if your environment is running a vulnerable version.
# Check the installed version of GuardDog
installed_version=$(pip show guarddog | grep Version | awk '{print $2}')
echo 'Current GuardDog Version:' $installed_version
# Verify if the version is below 2.7.1
if [ '$(printf '%s\
' '2.7.1' '$installed_version' | sort -V | head -n1)' != '2.7.1' ]; then
echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable GuardDog version detected! Please upgrade immediately.'
else
echo '[INFO] GuardDog is running a secure version.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-22871) is a Path Traversal (CWE-22) vulnerability existing in the safe_extract() function of GuardDog, a CLI tool designed to identify malicious PyPI packages. The root cause lies in the insufficient validation of relative file paths within PyPI package archives during the extraction and analysis process. When GuardDog processes a crafted archive containing directory traversal sequences (e.g., ../), it fails to restrict the extraction path to the intended target directory.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can craft a malicious PyPI package containing files with path traversal sequences in their names (e.g., ../../../../etc/cron.d/malicious_job or ../../../../home/user/.bashrc). When GuardDog is executed to scan this package, the safe_extract() function extracts these files directly into arbitrary locations on the host filesystem, bypassing directory boundaries. This allows the attacker to overwrite critical system files or inject malicious scripts, resulting in privilege escalation and arbitrary code execution.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Since GuardDog is commonly integrated into developer workstations and DevSecOps CI/CD pipelines to scan third-party dependencies, successful exploitation can compromise the entire build infrastructure. This could lead to source code exfiltration, supply chain contamination, and unauthorized access to production environments, posing severe business and operational risks.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
GuardDog is a CLI tool to identify malicious PyPI packages. Prior to 2.7.1, there is a path traversal vulnerability exists in GuardDog's safe_extract() function that allows malicious PyPI packages to write arbitrary files outside the intended extraction directory, leading to Arbitrary File Overwrite and Remote Code Execution on systems running GuardDog. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.7.1.
