Typemill Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via SVG Upload Vulnerability (CVE-2026-120218)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTTypemill versions up to and including 2.26.0
Remote authenticated attackers can upload malicious SVG files to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's browser context
Upgrade immediately to Typemill version 2.27.0 or later
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the official security patch by upgrading Typemill to version 2.27.0 or later. Use the following commands to update your installation:
# Navigate to your Typemill root directory and update via Composer
composer update typemill/typemill
# Alternatively, download and extract the patched release manually
wget https://github.com/typemill/typemill/archive/refs/tags/v2.27.0.tar.gz
tar -zxvf v2.27.0.tar.gz2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, configure your web server to force the download of SVG files instead of rendering them inline, preventing script execution in the browser context.
# Nginx configuration to mitigate inline SVG execution
location ~* ^/media/.*\.svg$ {
add_header Content-Disposition 'attachment';
add_header Content-Type 'application/octet-stream';
add_header X-Content-Type-Options 'nosniff';
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following command on your server to scan existing uploaded SVG files for common XSS vectors and script tags.
# Scan the media directory for SVG files containing script elements or event handlers
echo 'Scanning media directory for suspicious SVG files...'
find ./media/ -name '*.svg' -type f | xargs egrep -i '<script|javascript:|onload|onerror|onmouseover'Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
A security flaw exists in the image saving logic of Typemill, a flat-file CMS. The vulnerability resides within the ControllerApiImage::saveImage function in the system/typemill/Models/SvgSanitizer.php file. Due to insufficient sanitization of SVG file contents during the upload process, the application fails to properly neutralize embedded malicious scripts, leading to Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS).
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker with media upload privileges can craft a malicious SVG file containing embedded JavaScript (e.g., using <script> tags or inline event handlers like onload). When the attacker uploads this file, the flawed SvgSanitizer fails to strip the active content. Once stored on the server, any user or administrator who accesses the direct URL of the SVG or views a page rendering the image will trigger the execution of the malicious script within their browser session.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Although rated with a CVSS score of 3.5 (Low), the practical impact can be severe if an administrator triggers the payload. Successful exploitation can lead to session hijacking, administrative credential theft, and unauthorized modification of CMS content (website defacement), posing a significant risk to organizational reputation and data integrity.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A flaw has been found in Typemill up to 2.26.0. The impacted element is the function ControllerApiImage::saveImage of the file system/typemill/Models/SvgSanitizer.php. Executing a manipulation can lead to cross site scripting. The attack may be performed from remote. The exploit has been published and may be used. Upgrading to version 2.27.0 is sufficient to resolve this issue. This patch is called 9ca43c4a7b6764c5a6ac11a2ccc099b036ee3cef. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
