Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers prior to version 138.0.7204.157

Impact

A remote attacker can bypass the browser sandbox boundaries and potentially execute arbitrary code on the host system via a crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable channel version (138.0.7204.157 or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 138.0.7204.157 (All Desktop Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To mitigate this vulnerability, update Google Chrome to the latest version. For Linux-based enterprise environments, use the following package manager commands:

bash
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# For RedHat/CentOS/Fedora-based systems
sudo dnf upgrade google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, you can reduce the attack surface by disabling WebGL and GPU hardware acceleration via command-line flags:

bash
# Launch Chrome with WebGL and GPU acceleration disabled
google-chrome-stable --disable-webgl --disable-gpu --disable-software-rasterizer &

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to audit the currently installed Google Chrome version across your Linux endpoints:

bash
# Bash script to check Chrome version and identify vulnerability status
if command -v google-chrome &> /dev/null; then
    INSTALLED_VER=$(google-chrome --version | awk '{print $3}')
    echo '[INFO] Installed Chrome Version: '$INSTALLED_VER
    # Simple check against the patched version
    if [ '$(printf '%s\
' '138.0.7204.157' '$INSTALLED_VER' | sort -V | head -n1)' != '138.0.7204.157' ]; then
        echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable version detected. Upgrade required.'
    else
        echo '[OK] Chrome is up-to-date.'
    fi
else
    echo '[INFO] Google Chrome binary not found in standard PATH.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-6558) exists due to insufficient validation of untrusted input within the ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) and GPU components of Google Chrome. When processing untrusted graphical inputs or shader code, the lack of rigorous validation leads to memory corruption or unexpected state transitions within the GPU process.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

A remote attacker can host a malicious website containing specially crafted HTML and WebGL/WebGPU rendering instructions. When a victim visits this page, the renderer process forwards these instructions to the GPU process. Due to the input validation flaw in ANGLE, this triggers memory corruption (such as buffer overflow or Use-After-Free), allowing the attacker to escape the renderer sandbox and execute code with the privileges of the GPU process on the host OS.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, active exploitation has been observed in the wild. Successful exploitation poses a severe threat to enterprise security, potentially allowing attackers to gain initial access to corporate endpoints, move laterally within the network, and compromise sensitive business data.
