Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (such as Microsoft Edge) on macOS prior to version 143.0.7499.110

Impact

A remote attacker can trigger out-of-bounds memory access via a crafted HTML page, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution (RCE) or renderer process crashes

Mitigation

Immediately update all Chromium-based browsers to the latest stable version (143.0.7499.110 or higher) and enforce automated update policies across the enterprise

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to 143.0.7499.110 on macOS, and other Chromium-based browsers (e.g., Microsoft Edge) running equivalent engine versions

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To force-update Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge to the patched version on macOS, execute the following commands in the terminal:

bash
# Trigger Google Chrome update check and verify version
open -a 'Google Chrome' --args --check-for-updates
/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --version

# Trigger Microsoft Edge update check and verify version
open -a 'Microsoft Edge' --args --check-for-updates
/Applications/Microsoft\ Edge.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft\ Edge --version

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, you can mitigate the risk by disabling WebGL and GPU acceleration to prevent the ANGLE engine from processing untrusted web content:

bash
# Launch Google Chrome with WebGL and GPU acceleration disabled
/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --disable-webgl --disable-gpu &

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following Bash script to audit macOS endpoints and identify vulnerable installations of Google Chrome:

bash
#!/bin/bash
# Audit script to check Google Chrome version on macOS
if [ -d '/Applications/Google Chrome.app' ]; then
  version=$(defaults read '/Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/Info.plist' CFBundleShortVersionString)
  echo '[*] Current Chrome Version: '$version

  # Parse and compare version (Check if prior to 143.0.7499.110)
  IFS='.' read -r -a ver_arr <<< '$version'
  if [ ${ver_arr} -lt 143 ] || { [ ${ver_arr} -eq 143 ] && [ ${ver_arr} -lt 7499 ]; }; then
    echo '[!] WARNING: Vulnerable Chrome version detected! Please update immediately.'
  else
    echo '[+] OK: Chrome is secure or running a newer branch.'
  fi
else
  echo '[-] Google Chrome is not installed in the default directory.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-14174) is an out-of-bounds memory access flaw (CWE-787/CWE-119) within the ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) graphics translation layer of Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers. On macOS, insufficient validation of buffer boundaries during graphics resource rendering allows operations to read or write memory outside the allocated buffer limits.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by hosting a malicious HTML page containing specially crafted WebGL or shader code. When a target user visits the page, the browser's ANGLE engine fails to properly validate array indexes or buffer offsets while processing the rendering pipeline. This leads to memory corruption, enabling the attacker to execute arbitrary code within the context of the sandboxed renderer process or cause a Denial of Service (DoS). This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

If an employee visits a compromised website or clicks a malicious link, their endpoint could be compromised. When combined with a sandbox escape vulnerability, this flaw can allow attackers to gain full control of the host machine, pivot into the internal corporate network, and exfiltrate sensitive business data.
