Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome browser versions prior to 145.0.7632.75

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox via a crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (145.0.7632.75 or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to 145.0.7632.75 (Desktop platforms)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

For Linux-based enterprise endpoints, execute the following commands to update Google Chrome to the patched version:

bash
# Update package repositories and upgrade Google Chrome
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# Verify that the installed version is 145.0.7632.75 or higher
google-chrome --version

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

In Windows Active Directory environments where immediate patching is restricted, enforce Chrome auto-updates and prompt users to relaunch the browser using the following PowerShell commands:

powershell
# Enforce Google Chrome automatic updates via Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update' -Force | Out-Null
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update' -Name 'UpdateDefault' -Value 1

# Force relaunch notifications to ensure patches are applied
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Force | Out-Null
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'RelaunchNotification' -Value 1

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use this shell script to audit endpoints and identify vulnerable instances of Google Chrome running in your environment:

bash
#!/bin/bash
# Check running Chrome version and flag vulnerability status
chrome_path=$(which google-chrome 2>/dev/null || which google-chrome-stable 2>/dev/null)
if [ -z '$chrome_path' ]; then
    echo '[INFO] Google Chrome is not installed.'
    exit 0
fi

installed_ver=$($chrome_path --version | awk '{print $3}')
required_ver='145.0.7632.75'

if [ '$(printf '%s\
%s' '$required_ver' '$installed_ver' | sort -V | head -n1)' = '$required_ver' ]; then
    echo '[SAFE] Chrome version $installed_ver is secure.'
else
    echo '[CRITICAL] Vulnerable Chrome version detected: $installed_ver. Upgrade immediately!'
fi

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-2441) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing within the CSS engine of Google Chrome. It is classified under CWE-416. The root cause lies in the improper lifecycle management of memory objects during the parsing and rendering of complex CSS stylesheets and DOM tree manipulations. When the browser engine fails to clear pointers to memory blocks that have already been deallocated, it leaves the system susceptible to dangling pointer dereferences.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted HTML page containing malicious CSS rules and DOM manipulation scripts. When a victim visits the malicious website, the Chrome renderer process parses the CSS and triggers the premature deallocation of a specific memory object. The attacker then immediately reclaims the freed memory space with controlled payload data. When the browser attempts to reuse the stale pointer, it executes the attacker-controlled data, leading to arbitrary code execution within the context of the sandboxed renderer process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability has been added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild. While the execution is initially confined within the Chrome sandbox, attackers frequently chain such renderer-compromise vulnerabilities with sandbox escape exploits to gain full administrative access to the underlying operating system. This poses a severe threat to enterprise environments, potentially leading to initial access and subsequent lateral movement.
