Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTFirefox < 131.0.2, Firefox ESR < 128.3.1, Firefox ESR < 115.16.1, Thunderbird < 131.0.1, Thunderbird < 128.3.1, and Thunderbird < 115.16.0
An attacker can achieve arbitrary remote code execution (RCE) within the browser's content process, with active exploitation reported in the wild
Immediately update all affected installations to the latest patched versions (Firefox 131.0.2+, ESR 128.3.1+, ESR 115.16.1+, Thunderbird 131.0.1+, 128.3.1+, 115.16.0+)
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
For Linux environments (Ubuntu/Debian-based), execute the following commands to update the packages to the latest secure versions immediately.
# Update package lists and upgrade Firefox and Thunderbird to the latest versions
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install -y firefox thunderbird2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict outbound connections for the browser or block its execution temporarily using host-based firewalls or Group Policies. Below is a PowerShell command to block outbound traffic for Firefox on Windows.
# Temporarily block outbound network access for Firefox via Windows Firewall
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName 'Block Firefox Outbound Temporary' -Direction Outbound -Program 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe' -Action Block3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following script to audit the currently installed versions of Firefox and Thunderbird on your endpoints to identify vulnerable deployments.
# Check installed versions of Firefox and Thunderbird
echo '=== Firefox Version ==='
firefox --version 2>/dev/null || echo 'Firefox not installed'
echo '=== Thunderbird Version ==='
thunderbird --version 2>/dev/null || echo 'Thunderbird not installed'Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2024-9680) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw within the Animation Timelines component of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. It occurs when the browser processes web animation timelines and fails to properly nullify or clear pointers to objects that have already been deallocated from memory. Consequently, an attacker can manipulate the memory layout to reuse the freed memory space, leading to control flow hijacking.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a malicious payload on a website or injecting it into a compromised legitimate site. When a victim visits the site, the malicious JavaScript triggers precise allocation and deallocation of animation timeline objects, corrupting the heap memory. The attacker then populates the freed memory with shellcode, executing arbitrary commands within the context of the browser's sandboxed content process.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical) and inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses an immediate threat. Successful exploitation allows attackers to compromise endpoint systems without user interaction beyond visiting a webpage. This can serve as an initial entry point for lateral movement, ransomware deployment, and sensitive data exfiltration across the corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
An attacker was able to achieve code execution in the content process by exploiting a use-after-free in Animation timelines. We have had reports of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 131.0.2, Firefox ESR < 128.3.1, Firefox ESR < 115.16.1, Thunderbird < 131.0.1, Thunderbird < 128.3.1, and Thunderbird < 115.16.0.
