Roundcube Webmail Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability Leading to Email Theft Advisory (CVE-2024-42009)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTRoundcube Webmail versions through 1.5.7 and 1.6.x through 1.6.7
A remote attacker can execute malicious scripts in the victim's browser session by sending a crafted email, enabling unauthorized access, theft, and transmission of the victim's emails.
Immediately upgrade Roundcube Webmail to the patched versions (1.5.8, 1.6.8, or later).
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the official security updates immediately by upgrading to version 1.5.8 or 1.6.8/later.
To perform an in-place upgrade on a Linux-based server, execute the following commands:
# Download the latest secure release (e.g., 1.6.8)
wget https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/download/1.6.8/roundcubemail-1.6.8-complete.tar.gz
# Extract the archive
tar -zxvf roundcubemail-1.6.8-complete.tar.gz
cd roundcubemail-1.6.8
# Run the upgrade script pointing to your current installation directory
sudo ./bin/installto.sh /var/www/roundcube2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, deploy Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block malicious HTML payloads in email bodies. Additionally, enforce strict Content Security Policy (CSP) headers in your web server configuration:
# Add to your Nginx server block configuration
add_header X-XSS-Protection '1; mode=block' always;
add_header Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'self'; script-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline'; style-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline';" always;3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the currently running Roundcube version and inspect web server access logs for potential exploitation attempts:
# Check the installed Roundcube version
grep "RCMAIL_VERSION" /var/www/roundcube/program/include/iniset.php
# Scan access logs for suspicious requests targeting show.php with script tags or event handlers
grep -i 'show.php' /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep -E '(<script|javascript:|onerror=|onload=)'Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is a critical Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw within the message rendering engine of Roundcube Webmail. The root cause lies in a desanitization flaw within the message_body() function located in program/actions/mail/show.php. When processing incoming email messages, the application fails to properly sanitize and neutralize malicious HTML attributes and tags, allowing them to be executed within the context of the user's active session.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted email containing malicious HTML payloads to a target user. When the victim opens and views the email, the flawed message_body() function processes the payload, rendering and executing the embedded JavaScript within the victim's browser. Since the script runs under the victim's authenticated session, it can perform unauthorized actions such as silently exfiltrating sensitive emails to an attacker-controlled server or sending malicious emails to other contacts.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Roundcube is widely deployed across enterprise, government, and service provider environments. This vulnerability has been added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild. With an EPSS score exceeding 0.82, the likelihood of exploitation is extremely high. Successful exploitation compromises email confidentiality, facilitates lateral movement via spear-phishing, and severely damages organizational trust.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in Roundcube through 1.5.7 and 1.6.x through 1.6.7 allows a remote attacker to steal and send emails of a victim via a crafted e-mail message that abuses a Desanitization issue in message_body() in program/actions/mail/show.php.
