Cisco NX-OS CLI Command Injection Vulnerability (CVE-2024-20399) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco NX-OS Software running on Nexus series switches with authenticated Administrator credentials
Authenticated administrators can bypass CLI sandboxing and execute arbitrary commands as root on the underlying Linux operating system due to insufficient argument validation
Apply official Cisco NX-OS software updates immediately and restrict administrative CLI access using robust AAA and ACLs
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Administrators should upgrade to a fixed Cisco NX-OS Software release. Below is an example of downloading and applying an upgrade image via TFTP:
# Download the patched NX-OS image from a secure TFTP server
copy tftp://192.168.1.100/nxos.9.3.12.bin bootflash:nxos.9.3.12.bin
# Configure boot variables and save configuration
configure terminal
boot nxos bootflash:nxos.9.3.12.bin
write erase boot-variables
copy running-config startup-config
# Reload the switch to apply the update
reload2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict SSH access to trusted administrative hosts only and enforce strict AAA policies.
# Define an ACL to restrict SSH access to trusted management subnets
ip access-list RESTRICT_SSH
10 permit tcp 10.10.10.0/24 any eq 22
20 deny tcp any any eq 22
30 permit ip any any
# Apply the ACL to the VTY lines
line vty
ip access-class RESTRICT_SSH in3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Monitor system logs for unauthorized bash shell access or suspicious command executions.
# Check system logs for unauthorized root or bash shell activity
show logging logfile | include 'sys-char' | include 'root'
show logging logfile | include 'bash'
# Verify the current running NX-OS version

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2024-20399) is a command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) in the Command Line Interface (CLI) of Cisco NX-OS Software. The root cause is insufficient validation of arguments passed to specific configuration CLI commands. An attacker with administrative privileges can exploit this by inputting crafted arguments containing command separators, allowing them to escape the restricted CLI environment and execute commands directly on the underlying operating system.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To successfully exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must already possess valid Administrator credentials on the target device. During an active configuration session, the attacker executes a vulnerable CLI command, appending malicious OS commands using shell metacharacters (e.g., ';', '|', or backticks). Because the input is not properly sanitized, the NX-OS parser passes the payload directly to the underlying Linux shell, executing it with root privileges. Note that on devices where the bash-shell feature is already enabled and accessible to administrators (such as Nexus 3000, 9000 in standalone mode, and Nexus 7000 running 8.1(1)+), this vulnerability does not grant any additional privileges beyond what is already authorized.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and has been actively exploited in the wild by advanced persistent threat (APT) groups like 'Velvet Ant'. Although it requires administrative authentication, successful exploitation allows attackers to establish persistent backdoors, modify system firmware, and achieve complete control over critical network infrastructure, posing a severe threat to enterprise network integrity.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A vulnerability in the CLI of Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an authenticated user in possession of Administrator credentials to execute arbitrary commands as root on the underlying operating system of an affected device. This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of arguments that are passed to specific configuration CLI commands. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by including crafted input as the argument of an affected configuration CLI command. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system with the privileges of root. Note: To successfully exploit this vulnerability on a Cisco NX-OS device, an attacker must have Administrator credentials. The following Cisco devices already allow administrative users to access the underlying operating system through the bash-shell feature, so, for these devices, this vulnerability does not grant any additional privileges: Nexus 3000 Series Switches Nexus 7000 Series Switches that are running Cisco NX-OS Software releases 8.1(1) and later Nexus 9000 Series Switches in standalone NX-OS mode
