QNAP VioStor NVR OS Command Injection Vulnerability (CVE-2023-47565) Security Advisory & Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTLegacy QNAP VioStor NVR models running QVR Firmware 4.x
Authenticated attackers can execute arbitrary OS commands via network requests, potentially leading to full system compromise
Immediately upgrade QVR Firmware to version 5.0.0 or later, or restrict network access to the device
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
According to QNAP's official advisory, users must upgrade QVR Firmware to version 5.0.0 or later. This can be done via the web administration console or by manually uploading the firmware package.
# Check the current system firmware version via QNAP CLI
getcfg System Version
# Check the current build number
getcfg System 'Build Number'2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, isolate the NVR from the public internet and restrict access to trusted administrative IP addresses only.
# Restrict access to web ports (80/443) to a trusted admin IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100) using iptables
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.100 --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect web server access logs for suspicious patterns indicating command injection attempts.
# Search web access logs for common command injection payloads and utilities
grep -Ei '(/bin/sh|/bin/bash|curl|wget|chmod|cat%20/etc/passwd)' /var/log/apache2/access.logStop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2023-47565) is an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) affecting legacy QNAP VioStor NVR (Network Video Recorder) devices running QVR Firmware 4.x. The root cause lies in the insufficient sanitization and validation of user-supplied inputs before passing them to system shell execution functions within the web management interface.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker must first obtain authenticated access to the target device (even with low-privilege credentials). Once authenticated, the attacker sends a specially crafted HTTP request containing shell metacharacters (such as ';', '&', or '|') within the parameters. Because the backend application fails to escape these characters, the system executes the appended malicious commands with the privileges of the web server or root user.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to gain unauthorized access to sensitive surveillance video feeds, recruit the NVR into botnets for DDoS campaigns, or use the compromised device as a pivot point to compromise the internal corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
