Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Contec SolarView Compact version 6.00 and prior.

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can execute arbitrary OS commands via the web interface, leading to complete system compromise.

Mitigation

Apply the latest firmware updates immediately and restrict external internet access to the management interface.

Affected Products & Version Scope

Contec SolarView Compact version 6.00 and prior

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the latest secure firmware version provided by Contec. If direct patching is delayed, ensure the device is isolated from untrusted networks.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

Restrict access to the web interface using firewall rules. Below is an example of configuring iptables to block public access and only allow a trusted management subnet.

bash
# Block all public HTTP/HTTPS traffic to the device
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP

# Allow access only from a trusted management IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100)
iptables -I INPUT -s 192.168.1.100 -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I INPUT -s 192.168.1.100 -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Inspect web server access logs for suspicious requests targeting conf_mail.php containing shell metacharacters.

bash
# Scan web access logs for exploit attempts targeting conf_mail.php
grep -i 'conf_mail.php' /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep -E '(%3b|%7c|;|\||`|\$)'

# Check for active suspicious shell processes spawned by the web server user
ps -ef | grep -E '(apache|nginx|www-data)' | grep -E '(sh|bash|ash|nc|curl|wget)'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-29303) is an OS Command Injection flaw located in the conf_mail.php script of the Contec SolarView Compact web management console. Due to a lack of proper input validation and sanitization on user-supplied parameters, the application directly passes unsanitized input to system shell execution functions, allowing arbitrary command execution.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a crafted HTTP request targeting conf_mail.php. By embedding shell metacharacters such as semicolons (;), pipes (|), or backticks (` ``) into parameters associated with mail configuration or testing, the attacker forces the underlying operating system to execute arbitrary commands. This can be leveraged to establish a reverse shell or download and execute malicious payloads.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

Since SolarView Compact devices are deployed to monitor and manage solar power generation facilities, a successful compromise could allow attackers to disrupt power generation, manipulate monitoring data, or pivot into internal Industrial Control Systems (ICS/OT) networks. This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
