Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Samsung devices equipped with DSP (Digital Signal Processor) driver prior to SMR (Security Maintenance Release) Mar-2021 Release 1

Impact

A local attacker with high privileges can load arbitrary ELF libraries inside the DSP subsystem, potentially leading to complete system compromise and evasion of OS-level security controls

Mitigation

Immediately apply the official Samsung security update (SMR Mar-2021 Release 1 or later)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Samsung mobile devices running DSP driver versions prior to SMR Mar-2021 Release 1

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Ensure all Samsung devices are updated to the latest firmware via OTA or MDM policies.

You can verify the current security patch level and build information of a connected device using ADB:

bash
# Check the current security patch level
adb shell getprop ro.build.version.security_patch

# Check the device build ID
adb shell getprop ro.build.display.id

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

For legacy devices where patches cannot be immediately applied, restrict local access by disabling developer options and USB debugging via MDM policies to prevent unauthorized ADB access.

bash
# Manually disable USB debugging via ADB shell
adb shell settings put global adb_enabled 0

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Monitor system logs for anomalous DSP driver activities or unauthorized library loading attempts using the following logcat command:

bash
# Monitor real-time logs for DSP and library loading anomalies
adb logcat | grep -Ei 'dsp|adsprpc|ion|elf|invalid load'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-25371) exists in the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) driver of Samsung mobile devices. The root cause lies in the driver's failure to properly validate the integrity and cryptographic signatures of ELF (Executable and Linkable Format) libraries passed from user space before loading them. This allows a local attacker with high privileges (PR:H) to load unverified, malicious ELF files directly into the DSP subsystem.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain high privileges (such as system or root access) on the target device through other local exploits or malicious applications. Once elevated, the attacker writes a malicious ELF shared library (.so file) to the local filesystem. The attacker then triggers the vulnerable DSP driver's ioctl interface or system calls, passing the path of the malicious library. Because the driver lacks signature verification, it loads and executes the library within the isolated DSP memory context, allowing arbitrary code execution outside the standard Android OS security boundaries.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability is cataloged in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV), indicating active exploitation in the wild. Because the DSP subsystem operates beneath the standard Android framework, malicious code running inside the DSP can evade detection by mobile Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents. This poses a severe threat to enterprise environments, potentially allowing attackers to establish persistent backdoors, intercept sensitive communications, and exfiltrate confidential corporate data.
