Cisco ASA and FTD Web Services Interface Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability (CVE-2020-3580) Analysis & Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco ASA and FTD Software with AnyConnect or WebVPN configurations enabled
Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary script code in the user's browser context, potentially compromising session tokens and sensitive data
Apply official Cisco software updates immediately and restrict access to the web services interface
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Refer to the Cisco Security Advisory to identify and download the fixed software release for your platform. Below are sample commands to upgrade the ASA software image via TFTP and update the boot path.
# Download the secure ASA image from the TFTP server
copy tftp://192.168.1.100/asa914-47-linterim.spa disk0:/asa914-47-linterim.spa
# Configure the system to boot from the new image and save configuration
no boot system disk0:/asaold-image.bin
boot system disk0:/asa914-47-linterim.spa
write memory
reload2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, restrict access to the WebVPN/AnyConnect interface to trusted IP addresses using Access Control Lists (ACLs).
# Define an ACL to allow HTTPS access only from trusted administrator subnets
access-list RESTRICT_VPN_ADMIN extended permit tcp 203.0.113.0 255.255.255.0 any eq 443
access-list RESTRICT_VPN_ADMIN extended deny tcp any any eq 443
# Apply the ACL to the outside interface
access-group RESTRICT_VPN_ADMIN in interface outside3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the running software version and inspect the logs for potential XSS exploitation attempts containing suspicious script tags or event handlers.
# Verify the current ASA software version and WebVPN status
show version | include Software Version
show run webvpn
# Search local logs for common XSS payload patterns
show log | include (?i)(script|onerror|onload|alert)Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2020-3580) is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the web services interface of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software. The root cause is insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the web services interface of the affected device. When the application processes malicious input without proper sanitization or encoding, it reflects the payload back to the user's browser, leading to arbitrary script execution.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker targets the exposed web services interface (such as the AnyConnect portal or WebVPN login page). The attacker crafts a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads and uses social engineering, phishing, or targeted emails to entice an authenticated user or administrator to click the link. Upon clicking, the victim's browser sends the request to the Cisco device, which reflects the malicious script back to the browser. The script then executes within the security context of the vulnerable interface, allowing the attacker to hijack active sessions, steal cookies, or perform unauthorized administrative actions.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild. With a high EPSS score of over 0.85, it represents a high-priority threat. Successful exploitation can compromise the perimeter security gateway (VPN), serving as an entry point for lateral movement, credential harvesting, and subsequent ransomware deployment within the corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Multiple vulnerabilities in the web services interface of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks against a user of the web services interface of an affected device. The vulnerabilities are due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the web services interface of an affected device. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a user of the interface to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the interface or allow the attacker to access sensitive, browser-based information. Note: These vulnerabilities affect only specific AnyConnect and WebVPN configurations. For more information, see the Vulnerable Products section.
