Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Adobe Flash Player through 13.0.0.262, 14.x, 15.x, and 16.x through 16.0.0.287 on Windows and OS X, and through 11.2.202.438 on Linux

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the active user and compromise the host system by enticing users to visit a website containing malicious Flash content (SWF)

Mitigation

Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), it is highly recommended to completely uninstall Flash Player from all endpoints and disable Flash plugins in web browsers

Affected Products & Version Scope

Windows & OS X: Adobe Flash Player <= 13.0.0.262, 14.x, 15.x, <= 16.0.0.287 / Linux: <= 11.2.202.438

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Because Adobe Flash Player is officially EOL, the primary remediation is complete removal. On Windows systems, you can deploy the official KB4577586 update via PowerShell to permanently remove Flash Player.

powershell
# Check if the Flash Player Removal Update (KB4577586) is installed
$kb = Get-HotFix -Id KB4577586 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
if ($kb) {
    Write-Host 'Adobe Flash Player has been successfully removed via KB4577586.'
} else {
    Write-Warning 'KB4577586 is missing. Please deploy the update to remove Flash Player.'
}

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate uninstallation is not feasible in legacy environments, apply the ActiveX Kill-Bit via the Windows Registry to prevent Internet Explorer from loading the Flash Player control.

reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Set ActiveX Kill-Bit for Adobe Flash Player
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}]
'Compatibility Flags'=dword:00000400

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}]
'Compatibility Flags'=dword:00000400

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following command to scan for residual Flash Player shared libraries or plugins on Linux-based endpoints.

bash
# Search for legacy Flash Player shared object files on Linux
find /usr/lib/ /usr/lib64/ -type f \( -name '*flashplayer*' -o -name '*libflashplayer.so*' \) 2>/dev/null

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2015-0311) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) / memory corruption flaw residing within the ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM2) of Adobe Flash Player. The root cause lies in the improper memory management during the dynamic resizing of ByteArray objects in ActionScript 3 (AS3). When a buffer is resized, the application fails to properly nullify or update the references pointing to the old memory location, leaving dangling pointers.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted SWF file on a malicious or compromised website (Drive-by Download). When a victim visits the site, the malicious SWF manipulates the ByteArray size to trigger memory deallocation. The exploit then overwrites the freed memory space with attacker-controlled data, hijacks the virtual function table (vtable) pointer, bypasses DEP and ASLR using ROP (Return-Oriented Programming) chains, and executes arbitrary shellcode.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild as a zero-day in January 2015. Successful exploitation allows complete system compromise, enabling attackers to install malware, exfiltrate sensitive data, or establish a foothold for lateral movement within corporate networks. Legacy systems that still run outdated browsers and Flash plugins remain highly vulnerable.
