Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Ruby on Rails applications running versions prior to 3.2.18, 4.0.x before 4.0.5, and 4.1.x before 4.1.1, with route globbing enabled

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can read arbitrary system and application files by sending crafted HTTP requests containing directory traversal sequences

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade the Rails framework to patched versions (3.2.18, 4.0.5, 4.1.1 or higher) or apply routing constraints

Affected Products & Version Scope

Ruby on Rails versions before 3.2.18, 4.0.x before 4.0.5, and 4.1.x before 4.1.1

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Update your Gemfile to specify a secure version of Rails or Action Pack, then run Bundler to apply the update.

bash
# Example Gemfile modification
# gem 'rails', '3.2.18'
# gem 'rails', '4.0.5'
# gem 'rails', '4.1.1'

# Execute dependency update
bundle update rails actionpack

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If upgrading immediately is not feasible, restrict the route globbing parameters in config/routes.rb using regular expression constraints to reject directory traversal characters.

ruby
# config/routes.rb workaround
# Vulnerable route:
# match '*pages' => 'pages#show', via: :get

# Hardened route (restricting dots and path separators):
match '*pages' => 'pages#show', via: :get, constraints: { pages: /[^\.]+/ }

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following command to scan web server access logs for potential directory traversal exploitation attempts targeting your Rails application.

bash
# Scan web server logs for directory traversal patterns
grep -Ei '(%2e%2e|\.\./|\.\.\\)' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/httpd/access_log 2>/dev/null

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the Action Pack component (actionpack/lib/abstract_controller/base.rb) of Ruby on Rails, specifically within the implicit-render implementation. Rails automatically attempts to render a template matching the controller and action name when no explicit render call is made. When 'route globbing' (wildcard routing) is enabled, the application fails to properly sanitize input parameters before passing them to the template lookup mechanism, leading to a Directory Traversal vulnerability.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker targets endpoints configured with wildcard route parameters (e.g., *pages). By sending a crafted request containing directory traversal sequences such as GET /../../../../etc/passwd, the implicit rendering engine resolves the parameter as a file path relative to the template directory. Because the input is not sanitized, the engine traverses outside the intended directory and renders the contents of arbitrary files back to the attacker.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to retrieve highly sensitive files, including database credentials (database.yml), environment variables, and the application's secret_key_base. Exposure of these secrets often leads to secondary attacks, such as session hijacking or Remote Code Execution (RCE).
