Adobe Reader and Acrobat Collab.getIcon() Stack-Based Buffer Overflow RCE (CVE-2009-0927)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Reader and Acrobat versions before 9.1, 8.1.3, and 7.1.1
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code on the target system by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted PDF document
Immediately upgrade Adobe Reader/Acrobat to the latest patched versions (9.1, 8.1.3, 7.1.1 or higher) or disable Acrobat JavaScript
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to upgrade Adobe Reader/Acrobat to a non-vulnerable version (9.1, 8.1.3, 7.1.1 or later). For enterprise deployments, administrators can perform a silent installation of the patch using the following command:
# Silent installation of Adobe Reader update patch via PowerShell
Start-Process msiexec.exe -ArgumentList '/p AdbeRdrUpd910_all_incr.msp /qn /norestart' -Wait2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, disable Acrobat JavaScript to mitigate the attack vector. This can be enforced system-wide via the Windows Registry:
# Disable Acrobat JavaScript in Adobe Reader 9.0 via Registry
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\JSPrefs' -Name 'bEnableJS' -Value 0 -PropertyType DWord -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following PowerShell script to audit endpoints and identify vulnerable installations of Adobe Reader:
# Audit script to detect vulnerable Adobe Reader versions
$app = Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Where-Object { $_.DisplayName -like '*Adobe Reader*' } |
Select-Object DisplayName, DisplayVersion
if ($app) {
Write-Host 'Found Application:' $app.DisplayName 'Version:' $app.DisplayVersion
$ver = [version]$app.DisplayVersion
if ($ver -lt [version]'9.1.0') {
Write-Warning 'VULNERABLE: Adobe Reader version is below 9.1. Action required!'
} else {
Write-Host 'SECURE: Adobe Reader is patched.' -ForegroundColor Green
}
} else {
Write-Host 'Adobe Reader registry entry not found.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2009-0927) exists in Adobe Reader and Acrobat within the getIcon() method of the Collab object. Due to insufficient input validation and boundary checking (CWE-20, CWE-121) when processing arguments passed to this method, an attacker can overflow the allocated stack buffer, leading to corruption of the execution context.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker crafts a malicious PDF file containing embedded JavaScript that calls the Collab.getIcon() method with an excessively long string argument. When the victim opens the document, the PDF parser processes the JavaScript. The overly long argument overflows the stack buffer, overwriting the return address of the active stack frame. This redirects the execution flow to attacker-controlled shellcode, resulting in arbitrary code execution under the privileges of the running application.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is listed on the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild. Since PDF files are widely used for business communication, attackers frequently leverage this vulnerability in spear-phishing campaigns. Successful exploitation leads to complete endpoint compromise, allowing attackers to establish a foothold, exfiltrate sensitive data, or deploy ransomware across the corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Stack-based buffer overflow in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat 9 before 9.1, 8 before 8.1.3 , and 7 before 7.1.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted argument to the getIcon method of a Collab object, a different vulnerability than CVE-2009-0658.
Frequently Asked SecOps Questions (CVE-2009-0927)
FAQQ1. How critical is CVE-2009-0927 and is it actively exploited in the wild?
