FreeRDP RDPGFX ClearCodec Heap Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (CVE-2026-23533) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTClient environments running FreeRDP versions prior to 3.21.0
A malicious RDP server can trigger a client-side heap buffer overflow, leading to Denial of Service (DoS) or potential Remote Code Execution (RCE)
Immediately upgrade FreeRDP to the patched version 3.21.0 or higher
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update your FreeRDP packages to version 3.21.0 or later to apply the official security patch.
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11 freerdp2-shadow-cli libfreerdp2-2
# For RedHat/CentOS/Rocky Linux-based systems
sudo dnf clean all
sudo dnf upgrade freerdp -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict outbound RDP connections to untrusted external networks using firewall rules.
# Block outbound RDP connections to untrusted networks via iptables
sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 3389 -j DROP
# Allow outbound RDP only to trusted internal subnets (e.g., 10.0.0.0/8)
sudo iptables -I OUTPUT -p tcp -d 10.0.0.0/8 --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the installed version of FreeRDP on your systems to identify potential exposure.
# Script to check the installed FreeRDP version
xfreerdp --version 2>&1 | grep -E 'version [0-2]\.|version 3\.(20\.|[0-9]\.|1[0-9]\.)'
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable FreeRDP version detected. Upgrade is urgently required.'
else
echo '[INFO] System is secure or running the patched version.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-23533) exists within the RDPGFX graphics pipeline processing of FreeRDP, an open-source Remote Desktop Protocol implementation. Specifically, a client-side heap buffer overflow (CWE-122) occurs in the ClearCodec decoding path within libfreerdp/codec/clear.c. Due to insufficient boundary validation, maliciously crafted residual data causes out-of-bounds writes during color output processing.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can set up a rogue RDP server or compromise an existing one, then entice a vulnerable FreeRDP client to connect. Upon connection, the malicious server transmits a specially crafted RDPGFX ClearCodec bitmap stream. When the client attempts to decode this stream, it triggers an out-of-bounds write exceeding the allocated heap buffer. Depending on the memory allocator's behavior and the surrounding heap layout, this can result in application crashes (DoS) or arbitrary code execution (RCE) on the client machine.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
FreeRDP is widely utilized across Linux distributions, thin clients, and embedded systems to access Windows environments and VDI infrastructures. With a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical), this vulnerability poses a severe threat as it allows unauthenticated remote attackers to compromise client endpoints, potentially serving as an entry point into secure internal networks.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to version 3.21.0, a client-side heap buffer overflow occurs in the RDPGFX ClearCodec decode path when maliciously crafted residual data causes out-of-bounds writes during color output. A malicious server can trigger a client‑side heap buffer overflow, causing a crash (DoS) and potential heap corruption with code‑execution risk depending on allocator behavior and surrounding heap layout. Version 3.21.0 contains a patch for the issue.
