Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

D-Link DIR-505 firmware version 1.10B02 and prior

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary system commands or gain full control of the device by sending crafted filenames via TFTP

Mitigation

Disable the vulnerable TFTP service immediately, restrict access via firewall rules, and upgrade to a patched firmware or replace the legacy device

Affected Products & Version Scope

D-Link DIR-505 firmware version 1.10B02 and below with TFTP service enabled

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

As this device may be legacy or End-of-Life (EoL), check D-Link's official support portal for any available security updates. If an update is available, apply it via the web management interface.

bash
# 1. Download the latest secure firmware image from D-Link support
wget -O dir505_firmware.bin 'https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-505'

# 2. It is highly recommended to flash the firmware via the Web GUI to prevent bricking.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching is not feasible, immediately disable the TFTP service and block external access to UDP port 69.

bash
# 1. Terminate the running TFTP daemon process on the device
killall tftpd

# 2. Apply iptables rules to block incoming TFTP traffic on the WAN interface
iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 69 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --dport 69 -j DROP

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following commands to inspect the device for active TFTP services or suspicious log entries.

bash
# 1. Check if the TFTP service is listening on UDP port 69
netstat -anup | grep ':69 '
ps | grep tftpd

# 2. Search system logs for abnormally long filename upload attempts
grep -i 'tftpd' /var/log/messages | grep -E '.{100,}'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

A critical stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2026-120189) has been identified in the TFTP daemon (/usr/bin/tftpd) of the D-Link DIR-505 router. The root cause lies within the save_upload_file and mp_upload_file functions, which handle file upload requests. These functions fail to validate the length of the user-supplied filename parameter before copying it into a fixed-size stack buffer. This lack of boundary checking allows an attacker to overwrite adjacent stack memory, including the saved return address (CWE-121, CWE-119).

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must have network access to the target device's TFTP service (typically UDP port 69). The attacker sends a malicious TFTP Write Request (WRQ) containing an excessively long filename. When the /usr/bin/tftpd process processes this request, the oversized filename overflows the stack buffer and overwrites the return address. By redirecting the execution flow to a shellcode payload or a Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) chain, the attacker can bypass authentication and execute arbitrary commands with root privileges. A public exploit is currently available, increasing the likelihood of active exploitation.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

Since the D-Link DIR-505 is commonly deployed as a gateway or access point in SOHO environments, compromise of this device exposes the entire internal network. Attackers can leverage root access to intercept network traffic, perform lateral movement, or recruit the device into a botnet for DDoS campaigns. This poses severe risks to data confidentiality, network integrity, and business continuity.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

A vulnerability was identified in D-Link DIR-505 1.10B02. Affected is the function save_upload_file/mp_upload_file of the file /usr/bin/tftpd of the component TFTP Upload Filename Handler. The manipulation leads to stack-based buffer overflow. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. The exploit is publicly available and might be used.
