WordPress Discussion Board Plugin Stored XSS Vulnerability (CVE-2026-107765) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWordPress Discussion Board – WordPress Forum Plugin versions up to, and including, 2.6.0
Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access can inject arbitrary web scripts into the user profile Website field, executing in the browser of any user viewing the discussion topic
Immediately update the Discussion Board plugin to the latest patched version (2.6.1 or higher)
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Use WP-CLI to immediately update the Discussion Board plugin to the latest secure version.
# Check and update the Discussion Board plugin via WP-CLI
wp plugin update wp-discussion-board --activate2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate update is not feasible, deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing javascript: or script tags in the profile update parameters. Below is an example of Nginx configuration to mitigate potential exploitation attempts:
# Temporary Nginx mitigation rule for profile update requests
location ~* /wp-admin/profile\.php {
if ($request_method = POST) {
set $block_user_url 0;
}
if ($request_body ~* "(javascript:|script|onclick)") {
return 403 'Potential XSS Attack Detected';
}
proxy_pass http://wordpress_backend;
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following database query to inspect the WordPress database for any existing malicious payloads stored in the user metadata table.
# Query the database for suspicious user_url values
mysql -u root -p -e "SELECT user_id, meta_key, meta_value FROM wp_usermeta WHERE meta_key='user_url' AND (meta_value LIKE '%javascript:%' OR meta_value LIKE '%<script%' OR meta_value LIKE '%\'%');"Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Discussion Board plugin for WordPress, specifically within the user profile Website (user_url) field. The root cause lies in the ctdb_filter_comment_author_name() callback function, which is hooked to get_comment_author_link. The function interpolates the raw user_url value into a single-quoted href attribute without applying proper sanitization or escaping functions such as esc_url() or esc_attr().
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An authenticated attacker with low-privileged access (such as Subscriber) can update their profile website field with a malicious payload (e.g., javascript:alert(document.cookie) or by escaping the single quote attribute context). When the attacker posts a reply to any discussion topic, the plugin renders the author's link using the unescaped URL. Consequently, whenever any user or administrator visits the affected discussion topic, the injected script executes automatically in their browser context.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows attackers to hijack active user sessions, steal sensitive session cookies, perform unauthorized actions on behalf of the victim, or redirect users to malicious external sites. If an administrator views the compromised thread, the attacker could potentially achieve full site takeover by executing administrative actions via CSRF-like vectors.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The Discussion Board – WordPress Forum Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting in versions up to, and including, 2.6.0 via the user profile Website (user_url) field. This is due to insufficient output escaping in the ctdb_filter_comment_author_name() callback hooked to get_comment_author_link, which interpolates the raw user_url value into a single-quoted href attribute without esc_url() or esc_attr(). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses a Discussion Board topic containing the attacker's reply.
