RARLAB WinRAR Directory Traversal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2025-6218) Urgent Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTUsers of unpatched RARLAB WinRAR installations
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user by tricking them into opening a crafted archive file, leading to directory traversal and unauthorized file creation
Immediately upgrade WinRAR to the latest secure version and avoid extracting archives from untrusted sources
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to upgrade WinRAR to the latest secure release. Administrators can deploy the update silently across enterprise endpoints using Windows Package Manager (winget).
# Silently upgrade WinRAR to the latest secure version using winget
winget upgrade --id RARLab.WinRAR --silent --accept-source-agreements --accept-package-agreements2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, mitigate the risk by resetting file associations for archive formats to prevent accidental extraction via double-click.
# Temporarily remove default file associations for .rar and .zip to prevent accidental execution
Remove-Item -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.rar' -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Remove-Item -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip' -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Write-Host 'Archive file associations have been cleared to mitigate accidental extraction risks.' -ForegroundColor Yellow3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following PowerShell script to audit the installed WinRAR version and inspect the Startup directory for recently created suspicious files.
# Retrieve installed WinRAR version details
$winrarPath = (Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\WinRAR.exe' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue).'(Default)'
if ($winrarPath) {
$version = (Get-Item $winrarPath).VersionInfo.ProductVersion
Write-Host "Detected WinRAR Version: $version"
} else {
Write-Host 'WinRAR executable path not found in standard registry locations.' -ForegroundColor Cyan
}
# Audit the Startup folder for any files created or modified within the last 7 days
$startupPath = [System.IO.Path]::Combine($env:APPDATA, 'Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup')
Get-ChildItem -Path $startupPath -File | Where-Object { $_.LastWriteTime -gt (Get-Date).AddDays(-7) } | Select-Object Name, Length, LastWriteTimeBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2025-6218) is a critical directory traversal flaw (CWE-22) existing within the file path handling mechanism of RARLAB WinRAR. The root cause lies in the application's failure to properly sanitize and validate file paths contained within archive files during extraction. This allows specially crafted relative path sequences (such as '../') to bypass intended directory boundaries.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by constructing a malicious archive file containing files with manipulated directory traversal paths. The attack relies on user interaction, requiring the target to download and extract the malicious archive. Upon extraction, WinRAR traverses out of the target directory and writes malicious payloads (e.g., executable or script files) into sensitive system directories, such as the Windows Startup folder. These payloads are subsequently executed automatically when the system reboots or when triggered by user activity.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability has been added to the CISA KEV catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild by threat actors (such as APT-C-08). Successful exploitation grants the attacker the same privileges as the active user, potentially leading to full endpoint compromise, lateral movement within the corporate network, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
RARLAB WinRAR Directory Traversal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of RARLAB WinRAR. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of file paths within archive files. A crafted file path can cause the process to traverse to unintended directories. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current user. Was ZDI-CAN-27198.
