FreePBX Authentication Bypass and SQL Injection Leading to Remote Code Execution (CVE-2025-57819) Urgent Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTFreePBX endpoint module versions 15, 16, and 17
Unauthenticated remote attackers can bypass authentication, manipulate the database, and execute arbitrary code with administrator privileges
Immediately upgrade the FreePBX endpoint module to patched versions (15.0.66, 16.0.89, or 17.0.3) and restrict administrator access
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Use the FreePBX CLI (fwconsole) to immediately upgrade the vulnerable endpoint module to the patched versions (15.0.66, 16.0.89, or 17.0.3).
# Update FreePBX module repository and upgrade the endpoint module
fwconsole ma upgrade endpoint
# Reload the FreePBX framework to apply changes
fwconsole r2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, restrict access to the FreePBX administrator interface (/admin) to trusted IP addresses using firewall rules.
# Example: Restrict HTTP/HTTPS access to a trusted management subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.0/24) using iptables
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the currently installed version of the endpoint module and inspect web server logs for potential exploitation attempts.
# Check the currently installed version of the endpoint module
fwconsole ma list | grep -i endpoint
# Scan web server access logs for suspicious SQL injection patterns or endpoint module access
grep -Ei 'endpoint|union|select|concat' /var/log/httpd/access_log /var/log/asterisk/freepbx_security.log 2>/dev/nullBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability exists in the Endpoint module of FreePBX, an open-source web-based graphical user interface. Due to insufficient sanitization of user-supplied data, the application is vulnerable to SQL Injection (CWE-89) and Authentication Bypass Using an Alternate Path (CWE-288). This allows unauthenticated external actors to bypass the standard authentication flow and gain administrative access to the FreePBX Administrator panel.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted HTTP requests targeting the vulnerable parameters within the endpoint module without requiring any valid credentials. By injecting malicious SQL payloads, the attacker manipulates the database query logic to evaluate to true, thereby hijacking an administrator session. Once authenticated, the attacker can leverage administrative functionalities to perform arbitrary database manipulation or upload malicious scripts, leading to Remote Code Execution (RCE). This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
FreePBX controls critical VoIP and telecommunication infrastructure. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows attackers to intercept call logs, eavesdrop on communications, conduct toll fraud, or pivot deeper into the internal corporate network. With a CVSS score of 9.8 and an EPSS score of 0.9521, any internet-facing FreePBX system is at extreme risk of immediate compromise.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
FreePBX is an open-source web-based graphical user interface. FreePBX 15, 16, and 17 endpoints are vulnerable due to insufficiently sanitized user-supplied data allowing unauthenticated access to FreePBX Administrator leading to arbitrary database manipulation and remote code execution. This issue has been patched in endpoint versions 15.0.66, 16.0.89, and 17.0.3.
