Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Android Operating System and Chrome browser environments

Impact

Local attackers can escape the Chrome sandbox and escalate privileges to system_server without any user interaction or additional execution privileges

Mitigation

Immediately apply the Android Security Bulletin - September 2025 patch or later to all affected devices

Affected Products & Version Scope

Mobile devices running Android OS and Chrome browser prior to the September 2025 security patch level

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Device manufacturers and system administrators must apply the September 2025 Android Security Patch. For AOSP-based builds, synchronize the repository and verify the integration of the official patch commit:

bash
# Sync AOSP source code with the latest security patches
repo init -u https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest -b android-14.0.0_r1
repo sync -c -j$(nproc)

# Verify if the specific ART patch commit is applied
cd art/
git log --grep='444fc40dfb04d2ec5f74c443ed3a4dd45d3131f2'

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce strict browser policies and enable Safe Browsing via MDM or ADB to minimize the attack surface.

bash
# Force enable Safe Browsing on the device via ADB
adb shell content insert --uri content://settings/secure --bind name:s:safe_browsing_enabled --bind value:i:1

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Check the current security patch level of connected devices and audit system logs for signs of memory corruption or unexpected crashes in system_server.

bash
# Retrieve the current security patch level
adb shell getprop ro.build.version.security_patch

# Audit logcat for system_server crashes and potential UAF indicators
adb logcat -d | grep -E 'system_server|use-after-free|SIGSEGV'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-48543) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw existing in multiple locations within the Android Runtime (ART) and system components. It occurs when memory is freed but pointers to that memory are not properly cleared, allowing subsequent operations to reference the freed memory address. Attackers can manipulate the memory layout to execute arbitrary code.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker who has already compromised a restricted process (such as the Chrome renderer sandbox) can leverage this UAF vulnerability. By interacting with the highly privileged system_server via Binder IPC, the attacker corrupts the freed memory space. This process requires zero user interaction. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to escape the sandbox boundaries and execute arbitrary code with the elevated privileges of system_server.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

The system_server is a core process responsible for security and system control in the Android OS. Compromising this process grants access to sensitive user data, credentials, and system-level APIs. Since this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, active exploitation in the wild has been confirmed, posing a severe threat to enterprise mobile fleets.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

In multiple locations, there is a possible way to escape chrome sandbox to attack android system_server due to a use after free. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.
