Windows Hyper-V NT Kernel Integration VSP Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2025-21335) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows Server and Desktop operating systems running Windows Hyper-V virtualization environments
A local attacker with low privileges can exploit a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, leading to complete host compromise
Immediately apply the February 2025 Microsoft Patch Tuesday security updates and restrict local access to virtualization hosts
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the official security updates provided by Microsoft. You can force the installation of the latest cumulative updates (LCU) using PowerShell.
# Install Windows Update module and apply all pending security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be performed immediately in mission-critical environments, disable the Hyper-V feature if it is not required, and strictly restrict local and Remote Desktop (RDP) access to minimize the local attack surface.
# Disable Hyper-V features to mitigate the attack surface (apply only if virtualization is not required)
Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-All -NoRestart3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify whether the system has been patched and inspect the system event logs for any anomalous Hyper-V or VMBus driver behaviors.
# Check if the February 2025 security update (or later) is installed
Get-HotFix | Where-Object { $_.HotFixID -match 'KB505' }
# Query System Event Logs for Hyper-V and VMBus related warnings or errors
Get-WinEvent -LogName System | Where-Object { $_.Message -like '*Hyper-V*' -or $_.Message -like '*VMBus*' } | Select-Object -First 20 | Format-Table -WrapBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2025-21335) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing in the Windows Hyper-V NT Kernel Integration Virtual Service Provider (VSP). It occurs when the Hyper-V VSP processes communication sessions with guest operating systems or local virtualization components. The system fails to properly nullify or invalidate pointers to memory objects that have already been freed. Consequently, the kernel attempts to reuse these dangling pointers, leading to kernel memory corruption that can be leveraged to hijack the execution flow.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local execution capabilities on the target Windows system with low-privileged user access. The attacker then crafts and sends malicious VMBus messages or specific I/O requests to the VSP channel. By manipulating the kernel pool memory layout (Pool Feng Shui), the attacker forces the deallocation of a target kernel object and replaces its memory space with attacker-controlled data. When the kernel subsequently dereferences the freed pointer, it executes the attacker's payload within the kernel context (Ring 0), resulting in an elevation of privilege to SYSTEM.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it poses an immediate and severe threat to enterprise environments. If a virtualization host is compromised, the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all virtual machines (VMs) running on that host are entirely compromised. In multi-tenant cloud or enterprise virtualization infrastructures, gaining host kernel-level access allows attackers to perform lateral movement across the internal network and deploy ransomware, causing catastrophic business disruption.
