TeamT5 ThreatSonar Anti-Ransomware Arbitrary File Upload and Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability Advisory (CVE-2024-7694)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTTeamT5 ThreatSonar Anti-Ransomware platform
Remote attackers with administrator privileges can upload malicious files to execute arbitrary system commands on the server
Immediately apply the official security patches provided by the vendor and restrict access to the admin console
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the latest security updates provided by TeamT5 immediately. Below is an example command to update the platform package in a Linux environment.
# Example commands to update and restart the ThreatSonar service
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install threatsonar-platform -y
sudo systemctl restart threatsonar-service2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
Before applying the patch, restrict access to the administration console using a reverse proxy like Nginx to allow only trusted IP addresses.
# Nginx configuration to restrict access to the admin console
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name threatsonar.local;
location /admin {
allow 192.168.10.0/24; # Trusted Admin IP Range
deny all;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect the upload directories for any unauthorized executable scripts or web shells.
# Scan the upload directory for suspicious executable file extensions
find /var/www/threatsonar/uploads -type f \( -name '*.php' -o -name '*.jsp' -o -name '*.asp' -o -name '*.sh' \) -exec ls -la {} \;Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2024-7694) is a high-severity arbitrary file upload flaw (CWE-434) in TeamT5's ThreatSonar Anti-Ransomware platform. The file upload mechanism within the platform fails to properly validate and sanitize the content, extension, or MIME type of uploaded files. This allows authenticated users with administrative privileges to upload malicious executable files directly to the server's file system.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker must first obtain valid administrative credentials or hijack an active admin session on the ThreatSonar platform. Once authenticated, the attacker sends a crafted HTTP POST request containing a malicious payload (such as a web shell) to the file upload endpoint. Due to the lack of server-side validation, the file is saved in a web-accessible directory. The attacker then requests the uploaded file via its direct URL, triggering the execution of arbitrary commands under the privileges of the web server process.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Given that this vulnerability is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, it poses an immediate threat of active exploitation. Successful exploitation grants the attacker remote code execution (RCE) capabilities on the underlying operating system. This can lead to full system compromise, lateral movement within the internal network, data exfiltration, and the potential disabling of anti-ransomware defenses.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
ThreatSonar Anti-Ransomware from TeamT5 does not properly validate the content of uploaded files. Remote attackers with administrator privileges on the product platform can upload malicious files, which can be used to execute arbitrary system command on the server.
