Joomla SP Page Builder Arbitrary File Upload and Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability (CVE-2026-48908)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWebsites utilizing the SP Page Builder extension for Joomla
Unauthenticated attackers can upload and execute malicious PHP code, leading to complete takeover of the web server
Immediately update to the latest patched version, apply WAF rules, and disable PHP execution in upload directories
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patch
Immediately upgrade the SP Page Builder extension to the latest secure version provided by JoomShaper.
2. Temporary Mitigation (WAF & Web Server Hardening)
If an immediate update is not feasible, configure your Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block suspicious requests targeting the uploadCustomIcon action and restrict PHP execution in upload directories.
- Nginx Configuration to Disable PHP Execution in Upload Directories:
# Disable PHP execution in SP Page Builder media/upload directories
location ~* ^/images/.*\.(php|phtml|php3|php4|php5|phps)$ {
deny all;
access_log off;
log_not_found off;
}3. Indicators of Compromise (IoC) Detection
Scan your web server access logs for suspicious requests:
- Request URI: Look for requests containing
/index.php?option=com_sppagebuildercombined with file upload payloads. - File Integrity: Inspect the
/images/and SP Page Builder asset directories for newly created, unauthorized.phpfiles.
Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
A critical arbitrary file upload vulnerability (CVE-2026-48908) has been identified in SP Page Builder, a widely used extension for Joomla. The root cause of this vulnerability lies in the insufficient validation of file extensions and MIME types within file upload functionalities, such as the uploadCustomIcon handler.
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this flaw by sending a crafted HTTP POST request containing a malicious PHP script. Once uploaded to the web-accessible directory, the attacker can execute the script by directly accessing its URL, resulting in arbitrary remote code execution (RCE) under the privileges of the web server process.
This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and has been added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, with an EPSS score of 0.94, indicating an extremely high risk of exploitation.
