Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Roundcube versions before 1.4.15, 1.5.x before 1.5.5, and 1.6.x before 1.6.4

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the victim's browser session by sending a crafted HTML email containing a malicious SVG document

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Roundcube to the patched versions (1.4.15, 1.5.5, or 1.6.4 and above)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Roundcube versions < 1.4.15, 1.5.x < 1.5.5, and 1.6.x < 1.6.4

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Upgrade your Roundcube installation to the latest secure release using the official update script or package manager.

bash
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install roundcube roundcube-core

# Manual upgrade using the official complete tarball
cd /tmp
wget https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/download/1.6.4/roundcubemail-1.6.4-complete.tar.gz
tar -zxvf roundcubemail-1.6.4-complete.tar.gz
cd roundcubemail-1.6.4
sudo ./bin/installto.sh /var/www/roundcube

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be applied immediately, enforce a strict Content Security Policy (CSP) on your web server to mitigate unauthorized script execution.

nginx
# Add to your Nginx server block configuration
add_header Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'self'; script-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval'; object-src 'none'; frame-ancestors 'none';" always;

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Verify the current installed version of Roundcube and inspect web server access logs for potential exploitation attempts.

bash
# Check the current Roundcube version
grep "RCMAIL_VERSION" /var/www/roundcube/program/include/iniset.php

# Search access logs for suspicious SVG or script injection patterns
sudo grep -Ei 'svg|washtml|javascript' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/apache2/access.log | grep -E '(<script|onload|onerror)'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2023-5631) exists in the HTML sanitization library program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_washtml.php of the Roundcube Webmail platform. The root cause is insufficient validation and sanitization of SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) documents embedded within HTML email messages. This flaw allows specifically crafted SVG elements to bypass the built-in HTML sanitizer, leading to the rendering of malicious scripts.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by sending an email containing a specially crafted HTML body with an embedded SVG document. When the victim opens the email, the Roundcube server processes the message using rcube_washtml.php. Due to the sanitization bypass, the malicious SVG payload is served to the client's browser, executing arbitrary JavaScript within the context of the victim's active session.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to hijack user sessions, steal sensitive CSRF tokens, access private emails, and perform unauthorized actions on behalf of the victim. This poses a severe risk of data exfiltration and lateral movement within corporate networks.
