Roundcube Webmail Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability via Plain Text Email Link Processing (CVE-2023-43770)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTRoundcube Webmail versions before 1.4.14, 1.5.x before 1.5.4, and 1.6.x before 1.6.3
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the victim's browser session by sending a crafted text/plain email, potentially leading to session hijacking and account takeover
Immediately upgrade Roundcube Webmail to the patched versions (1.4.14, 1.5.4, 1.6.3, or later) and enforce strict Content Security Policies
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Upgrade your Roundcube installation to the latest secure release. Below are the commands to perform an in-place upgrade on a Linux-based mail server.
# Navigate to the Roundcube installation directory
cd /var/www/roundcube
# Download the latest secure release (e.g., 1.6.3 or higher)
wget https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/download/1.6.3/roundcubemail-1.6.3-complete.tar.gz
# Extract and run the official upgrade installer script
tar -zxvf roundcubemail-1.6.3-complete.tar.gz
cd roundcubemail-1.6.3
./bin/installto.sh /var/www/roundcube2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, mitigate the risk by implementing a strict Content Security Policy (CSP) header in your web server configuration to block unauthorized inline script execution.
# Example Nginx configuration to enforce strict CSP headers
add_header Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'self'; script-src 'self'; object-src 'none'; frame-ancestors 'none';" always;3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the currently running version of Roundcube and inspect web server access logs for potential exploitation attempts.
# 1. Check the currently installed Roundcube version
grep "RCMAIL_VERSION" /var/www/roundcube/program/include/iniset.php
# 2. Scan web server access logs for suspicious script injection patterns
grep -Ei 'javascript:|onclick|onerror|<script' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/apache2/access.logBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2023-43770) is a stored/reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw within the link parsing and rendering engine of Roundcube Webmail. To display plain text (text/plain) emails safely, Roundcube utilizes the program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_string_replacer.php component to convert plain text URLs into clickable HTML anchor (<a>) tags. Due to insufficient input sanitization and improper escaping within this component, specially crafted malicious links can bypass the filter and render executable scripts directly in the user's browser.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker crafts a plain text email containing a malicious payload embedded within a URL structure designed to exploit browser DOM parsing behaviors. When the email is delivered, Roundcube's backend processes the message and invokes rcube_string_replacer.php to convert the text into HTML. Once the authenticated victim opens the email, the malicious link is rendered or triggered, executing the attacker's arbitrary JavaScript payload within the context of the victim's active session.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability, this flaw is actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to steal sensitive session cookies, hijack active user sessions, bypass CSRF protections, and gain unauthorized access to the victim's mailbox. This can lead to unauthorized data exfiltration, spear-phishing campaigns initiated from compromised internal accounts, and further lateral movement within the corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Roundcube before 1.4.14, 1.5.x before 1.5.4, and 1.6.x before 1.6.3 allows XSS via text/plain e-mail messages with crafted links because of program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_string_replacer.php behavior.
