Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Adobe ColdFusion versions 2018u18 (and earlier), 2021u8 (and earlier), and 2023u2 (and earlier)

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can bypass security filters to access administrative CFM and CFC endpoints, potentially leading to remote code execution (RCE)

Mitigation

Immediately apply the official Adobe security patch (APSB23-47) and restrict external access to ColdFusion administrator consoles

Affected Products & Version Scope

Adobe ColdFusion 2018 Update 18 and earlier, ColdFusion 2021 Update 8 and earlier, and ColdFusion 2023 Update 2 and earlier

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official hotfix provided in Adobe Security Bulletin APSB23-47 using the ColdFusion administrator or command-line update utility.

bash
# Navigate to the ColdFusion bin directory and run the update script
cd /opt/ColdFusion2021/cfusion/bin
./cfupdate.sh -install

# For manual installation, download the hotfix JAR from Adobe and execute:
# java -jar coldfusion-out-of-band-hotfix.jar

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be applied immediately, block external access to the ColdFusion Administrator (/CFIDE) and CFC endpoints at the web server level.

nginx
# Nginx configuration to block external access to sensitive ColdFusion paths
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name your-coldfusion-app.com;

    # Restrict access to Administrator and internal scripts
    location ~* ^/(CFIDE|cf_scripts|rest|cfformgateway)/ {
        allow 10.0.0.0/8; # Allow trusted internal IP range only
        deny all;
    }

    # Block direct access to ColdFusion Components (CFC)
    location ~* \.cfc$ {
        deny all;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Scan web server and ColdFusion access logs for suspicious path traversal or bypass patterns (e.g., semicolons or double slashes in URLs).

bash
# Search for potential bypass attempts in access logs
grep -Ei '(/CFIDE/|/cf_scripts/|\.cfc).*([;%]|\.\.)' /var/log/nginx/access.log /opt/ColdFusion*/cfusion/logs/access.log

# Verify the currently installed ColdFusion version and update level
cat /opt/ColdFusion*/cfusion/lib/updates.xml | grep -E '<version>|<update>'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2023-38205) is a critical Improper Access Control issue (CWE-284) in Adobe ColdFusion. The root cause lies in a Path Normalization Discrepancy between the front-end web server (such as IIS or Apache) and the back-end ColdFusion servlet engine. Due to improper handling of specific path delimiters or special characters (e.g., semicolons) during URL parsing, the security filters designed to restrict access to administrative endpoints are bypassed.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely without requiring any user interaction (UI:N). By sending a specially crafted HTTP request containing specific character sequences, the attacker tricks the front-end security filter into treating the request as a non-restricted public path. Once passed to the ColdFusion engine, the path is normalized and resolved to administrative CFM (ColdFusion Markup) or CFC (ColdFusion Component) endpoints. This allows unauthorized access to administrative functions, which can be chained with other deserialization or file upload vulnerabilities to achieve full Remote Code Execution (RCE).

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability is highly critical and is actively exploited in the wild, as evidenced by its inclusion in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. With an EPSS score of 0.998 (99.8%), it represents an immediate threat to any exposed ColdFusion instance. Successful exploitation can lead to complete compromise of the application server, unauthorized access to backend databases, lateral movement within the internal network, and significant business disruption.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

Adobe ColdFusion versions 2018u18 (and earlier), 2021u8 (and earlier) and 2023u2 (and earlier) are affected by an Improper Access Control vulnerability that could result in a Security feature bypass. An attacker could leverage this vulnerability to access the administration CFM and CFC endpoints. Exploitation of this issue does not require user interaction.
