Windows CNG Key Isolation Service Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2022-41125) Technical Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTMicrosoft Windows operating systems including Windows 10, 11, and Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, 2022 utilizing the CNG Key Isolation service
A local authenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges by running a specially crafted application, leading to complete system compromise
Apply the official Microsoft Latest Cumulative Update (LCU) immediately and restrict local logon privileges for non-administrative users
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the latest cumulative security updates provided by Microsoft. You can force the update process using PowerShell.
# Install and import the PSWindowsUpdate module to force security updates
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict local logon rights and enforce strict access control policies to minimize the attack surface.
# Remove unauthorized users from the Remote Desktop Users group to prevent local access
Remove-LocalGroupMember -Group 'Remote Desktop Users' -Member 'TargetUsername'
# Disable the built-in Guest account to prevent unauthorized local sessions
Disable-LocalUser -Name 'Guest'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Monitor for anomalous child processes spawned by the LSASS process and verify the installation of security updates post-November 2022.
# Detect anomalous child processes spawned by lsass.exe (e.g., cmd.exe, powershell.exe)
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process | Where-Object { $_.ParentProcessId -eq (Get-Process lsass).Id } | Select-Object ProcessId, Name, CommandLine, CreationDate
# Verify if security updates released after November 2022 are installed
Get-HotFix | Where-Object { $_.InstalledOn -gt '2022-11-08' } | Format-Table Source, HotFixID, Description, InstalledOnBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2022-41125) is an Out-of-bounds Write (CWE-787) memory corruption vulnerability within the Windows CNG (Cryptography Next Generation) Key Isolation Service (KeyIso). The CNG Key Isolation service is hosted in the Local Security Authority (LSA) process and isolates private keys and associated cryptographic operations. The root cause lies in the service's failure to properly validate the size of input parameters passed via Inter-Process Communication (IPC) from user-mode processes, allowing an attacker to write data past the allocated buffer boundaries.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first establish local access with low-privileged user credentials (PR:L) on the target system. The attacker then sends crafted input parameters to the RPC interface exposed by the CNG Key Isolation service. Due to the lack of bounds checking, this input triggers an out-of-bounds write, corrupting adjacent heap memory structures or function pointers. This allows the attacker to hijack the execution flow of the service and execute arbitrary payloads under the 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' context. Since this requires no user interaction (UI:N) and has low complexity (AC:L), it has been actively exploited in the wild (CISA KEV).
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerability, it serves as a critical component in multi-stage cyber attacks. Once initial access is gained (via phishing, web exploits, etc.), attackers leverage this vulnerability to bypass Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents, dump credentials from LSASS memory, and perform lateral movement across the enterprise network. This can lead to domain-wide compromise, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment, posing a severe threat to business continuity.
