Trend Micro Apex One Remote Code Execution Vulnerability via Rollback Mechanism (CVE-2022-40139)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTTrend Micro Apex One and Apex One as a Service client agents
An attacker with administrative console access can force clients to execute unverified rollback packages, leading to Remote Code Execution (RCE) with SYSTEM privileges
Apply the official Trend Micro security patches (CP 11136 / SP1 CP 11046 or higher) and restrict access to the admin console
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the latest Critical Patches provided by Trend Micro immediately.
- Apex One 2019: Apply Critical Patch 11136 or higher
- Apex One (Service Pack 1): Apply CP 11046 or higher
2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
Before patching, restrict access to the Apex One administration console (default port 4343) to trusted administrative IP addresses only.
# Example: Restrict IIS access to the OfficeScan site to a specific admin IP (e.g., 192.168.10.50)
Import-Module WebAdministration
Set-WebConfigurationProperty -Filter '/system.webServer/security/ipSecurity' -Name 'allowUnlisted' -Value $false -PSPath 'IIS:\Sites\OfficeScan'
Add-WebConfigurationProperty -Filter '/system.webServer/security/ipSecurity' -Name '.' -Value @{ipAddress='192.168.10.50';allowed='true'} -PSPath 'IIS:\Sites\OfficeScan'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the current build version of the Apex One client and audit administrative logs for unauthorized rollback commands or logins from anomalous IP addresses.
# PowerShell script to query the local registry for Apex One client version and build
$RegistryPath = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\TrendMicro\PC-cillinNTCorp\CurrentVersion'
if (Test-Path $RegistryPath) {
$Version = Get-ItemProperty -Path $RegistryPath -Name 'Version' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
$Build = Get-ItemProperty -Path $RegistryPath -Name 'Build' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Write-Output 'Apex One Client Version: ' + $Version.Version + ' Build: ' + $Build.Build
} else {
Write-Output 'Apex One Client Registry path not found.'
}Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability exists within the rollback mechanism of Trend Micro Apex One and Apex One as a Service clients. The root cause is improper validation of components and digital signatures during the client rollback process. This flaw allows the client agent to accept and execute unverified packages, mistaking them for legitimate update components.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first compromise or obtain administrative console access to the Trend Micro Apex One server. Once authenticated, the attacker can abuse administrative functions to instruct target client agents to perform a rollback. By pointing the clients to a malicious, unverified rollback package hosted by the attacker, the client agents download and execute the payload without proper validation, resulting in arbitrary code execution.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Since endpoint security agents typically run with elevated system privileges (SYSTEM/Administrator), successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows complete compromise of the underlying host. In an enterprise environment, this can lead to widespread lateral movement, deployment of ransomware, and exfiltration of sensitive corporate data. Given that this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild (listed in CISA KEV), it poses an immediate threat to organizations running unpatched instances.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Improper validation of some components used by the rollback mechanism in Trend Micro Apex One and Trend Micro Apex One as a Service clients could allow a Apex One server administrator to instruct affected clients to download an unverified rollback package, which could lead to remote code execution. Please note: an attacker must first obtain Apex One server administration console access in order to exploit this vulnerability.
