Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Android and embedded devices utilizing Arm Mali GPU Bifrost (r0p0 to r38p1, r39p0), Valhall (r19p0 to r38p1, r39p0), and Midgard (r4p0 to r32p0) drivers

Impact

Local unprivileged attackers can exploit a Use-After-Free (UAF) condition in GPU memory operations to gain arbitrary kernel code execution and full root privileges

Mitigation

Apply the latest security patches provided by chipset vendors and OEMs, and immediately upgrade vulnerable driver versions

Affected Products & Version Scope

Affected Arm Mali GPU Driver Families: - Bifrost: r0p0 through r38p1, and r39p0 - Valhall: r19p0 through r38p1, and r39p0 - Midgard: r4p0 through r32p0

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To remediate this vulnerability, integrate the patched driver source (r40p0 or later) into your kernel build environment. Below is an example of downloading and compiling the updated driver source.

bash
# 1. Download the patched Arm Mali GPU driver source
wget https://developer.arm.com/-/media/Files/downloads/mali-drivers/kernel/mali-bifrost-valhall/DX910-SW-95002-r40p0-00rel0.tgz
tar -zxvf DX910-SW-95002-r40p0-00rel0.tgz -C ./kernel/drivers/gpu/arm/

# 2. Rebuild the kernel with the updated driver
make ARCH=arm64 defconfig
make ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-android- -j$(nproc)

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to the Mali GPU device node to prevent unprivileged local applications from interacting with the vulnerable driver.

bash
# Restrict read/write permissions on the Mali GPU device node
chmod 600 /dev/mali0
chown root:root /dev/mali0

# Verify SELinux enforcing status to ensure sandbox policies are active
getenforce

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to verify the active Mali driver version and inspect kernel logs for potential exploitation attempts or anomalous GPU memory faults.

bash
#!/bin/bash
echo '[+] Checking active Mali GPU driver version...'
if [ -f /sys/module/mali_kbase/version ]; then
    cat /sys/module/mali_kbase/version
else
    modinfo mali_kbase 2>/dev/null | grep -E '^version:' || echo 'Mali driver module not loaded.'
fi

echo '[+] Auditing dmesg for GPU-related memory anomalies...'
dmesg | grep -Ei 'mali|uaf|use-after-free|page fault|translation fault'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-38181) is a critical Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw within the Arm Mali GPU kernel driver's memory management subsystem. The root cause lies in the improper handling of reference counting and page mapping during GPU memory allocation and deallocation operations. When the driver fails to properly track or invalidate mappings of freed memory pages, it allows subsequent operations to access and modify memory that has already been returned to the system allocator.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker operating in user space (such as a non-privileged application) can trigger this vulnerability by invoking specific sequence of ioctl system calls designed to manipulate GPU memory mappings. By exploiting the race condition or reference counting flaw, the attacker ensures that a specific memory page is freed while the GPU MMU page tables still retain a valid reference to it. The attacker then sprays the kernel heap to reclaim the freed page with sensitive kernel structures (e.g., credentials or function pointers) and modifies them via the dangling GPU mapping, achieving local privilege escalation (LPE) to root.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a vulnerability listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, CVE-2022-38181 has been actively exploited in the wild to target mobile and embedded ecosystems. Successful exploitation completely compromises the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected device. In an enterprise environment, compromised mobile endpoints can serve as an initial entry point for lateral movement, credential harvesting, and unauthorized access to corporate networks and cloud assets.
