Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) Driver Out-of-Bounds Write Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2022-37969) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAlmost all active versions of Windows OS, including Windows 7, 8.1, 10, 11, and Windows Server 2008 through 2022.
A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability to gain SYSTEM privileges, leading to complete compromise of the target system.
Immediately apply the September 2022 Microsoft security updates and monitor unpatched assets for anomalous local execution.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the official security updates provided by Microsoft. You can force the installation of cumulative updates using PowerShell.
# Install and import the PSWindowsUpdate module to apply pending security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
Because this is a kernel-level vulnerability, there is no direct workaround other than patching. However, you can reduce the attack surface by restricting local execution privileges and disabling remote management protocols for non-administrative users.
# Disable WinRM to prevent remote lateral movement attempts
Disable-PSRemoting -Force
# Audit and restrict Remote Desktop Users group membership
Remove-LocalGroupMember -Group 'Remote Desktop Users' -Member 'Everyone' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the patch status by checking the file version of clfs.sys and audit security logs for suspicious privilege escalation activities.
# Check the file version of the CLFS driver to verify patch application
$clfsPath = '$env:SystemRoot\System32\drivers\clfs.sys'
if (Test-Path $clfsPath) {
(Get-Item $clfsPath).VersionInfo | Select-Object FileVersion, ProductVersion
}
# Monitor Security Event Log for suspicious process creation (Event ID 4688)
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Security'; ID=4688} -MaxEvents 50 |
Where-Object {$_.Message -match 'cmd.exe' -or $_.Message -match 'powershell.exe'} |
Select-Object TimeCreated, Id, Message | Format-ListBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) issue residing in the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) driver (clfs.sys). CLFS is a kernel-mode subsystem designed to manage high-performance transaction logs. The root cause lies in the insufficient validation of input data structures when parsing specially crafted Base Log Files (.blf). An attacker can exploit this flaw to corrupt kernel memory structures.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first establish local access to the target system with low-privilege user rights. The attacker then triggers the vulnerability by passing a maliciously structured .blf file to the CLFS API. Due to the lack of bounds checking on specific offset fields within the file header, the driver performs an out-of-bounds write into the kernel pool. By carefully orchestrating this memory corruption, the attacker can overwrite process security tokens, elevating their privileges to NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, CVE-2022-37969 has been actively exploited in the wild. If an attacker achieves SYSTEM-level privileges on critical infrastructure assets or Domain Controllers, they can bypass endpoint security controls, deploy ransomware, establish persistent backdoors, and compromise the entire corporate network, causing severe business disruption.
