Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome browser versions prior to 105.0.5195.52

Impact

A remote attacker can potentially exploit heap corruption and execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML page targeting the Network Service

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Google Chrome to the latest stable version (105.0.5195.52 or higher) and enforce auto-updates via enterprise group policies

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 105.0.5195.52 (All platforms including Windows, macOS, and Linux)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To upgrade Google Chrome to the patched version on Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux systems, execute the following commands:

bash
# Update package repositories and upgrade Google Chrome
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# Verify the installed version
google-chrome --version

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce Chrome auto-updates and restrict access to untrusted external sites. On Windows environments, you can enforce Chrome Update policies via PowerShell:

powershell
# Enforce Google Chrome Auto-Update via Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update' -Force | Out-Null
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update' -Name 'UpdateDefault' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force

# Force apply group policies
gpupdate /force

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to audit and identify running instances of vulnerable Chrome versions across your Linux endpoints:

bash
# Identify running Chrome processes and print their versions
ps aux | grep chrome | awk '{print $11}' | sort -u | while read -r path; do
  if [ -f '$path' ]; then
    echo 'Executable: '$path
    '$path' --version
  fi
done

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-3038) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing within the Network Service component of Google Chrome, specifically during the handling of network requests (e.g., in URLLoader::NotifyCompleted). It occurs when the browser attempts to access a memory address of an object that has already been deallocated, leading to heap memory corruption.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker hosts a specially crafted HTML page containing malicious JavaScript. When a victim visits this page, the script triggers asynchronous network requests. By exploiting race conditions or specific timing behaviors, the attacker forces the destruction of the underlying network loader object while keeping a dangling pointer. The attacker then reclaims the freed memory space with controlled payload data. When the Network Service subsequently invokes a callback on the dangling pointer, control flow is hijacked, enabling remote code execution (RCE).

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, it has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to compromise the browser process, bypass sandbox boundaries when chained with other local exploits, and gain full control over the user's workstation. This poses a severe threat to corporate networks, potentially leading to data exfiltration and lateral movement.
