Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

WSO2 API Manager (2.2.0 to 4.0.0), Identity Server (5.2.0 to 5.11.0), Enterprise Integrator (6.2.0 to 6.6.0), and other major WSO2 products

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can upload and execute arbitrary JSP files via a crafted HTTP request, leading to complete system compromise

Mitigation

Apply official WSO2 security patches immediately, restrict external access to the '/fileupload' endpoint, and disable execution permissions in web root subdirectories

Affected Products & Version Scope

WSO2 API Manager 2.2.0 to 4.0.0, WSO2 Identity Server 5.2.0 to 5.11.0, WSO2 Identity Server Analytics 5.4.0 to 5.6.0, WSO2 Identity Server as Key Manager 5.3.0 to 5.11.0, WSO2 Enterprise Integrator 6.2.0 to 6.6.0, WSO2 Open Banking AM/KM 1.4.0 to 2.0.0

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Refer to the WSO2 Security Advisory (WSO2-2021-1738) and apply the latest security patches. Use the WSO2 Update tool to update your deployment to the patched version.

bash
# Example of applying hotfixes using the WSO2 Update tool
./wso2update_linux --username 'WSO2_USER' --password 'WSO2_PASS'

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be applied immediately, block external access to the /fileupload endpoint and filter directory traversal patterns using a reverse proxy or WAF.

nginx
# Nginx configuration to block external access to the vulnerable endpoint
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name wso2.internal;

    location ~* /fileupload {
        deny all;
        return 403;
    }

    location / {
        proxy_pass http://localhost:9443;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Scan WSO2 access logs and web application directories to detect unauthorized JSP file uploads and directory traversal attempts.

bash
# 1. Search access logs for directory traversal attempts on the fileupload endpoint
grep -i 'fileupload' /opt/wso2/*/repository/logs/http_access_*.log | grep -E '\.\./'

# 2. Identify newly created or suspicious JSP files in the webapps directory
find /opt/wso2/*/repository/deployment/server/webapps/ -name '*.jsp' -mtime -30

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-29464) is a critical unrestricted file upload and directory traversal flaw in the file upload servlet of various WSO2 products. The internal /fileupload endpoint fails to properly validate file extensions and destination paths. Consequently, an attacker can manipulate the Content-Disposition header with directory traversal sequences (../../) to bypass the default temporary directory and write files directly into the web root (e.g., repository/deployment/server/webapps).

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An unauthenticated attacker sends a multipart POST request to the vulnerable /fileupload endpoint. By embedding a directory traversal sequence in the filename parameter (e.g., ../../../../repository/deployment/server/webapps/sh.jsp), the attacker forces the WSO2 server to write an arbitrary JSP WebShell into a publicly accessible directory under the web root. Once uploaded, the attacker accesses the JSP file via a standard HTTP request, allowing them to execute arbitrary OS commands with the privileges of the WSO2 process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical) and its inclusion in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to gain initial access, pivot within internal networks, exfiltrate sensitive database credentials, deploy ransomware, and compromise integrated Active Directory environments, posing an existential threat to enterprise infrastructure.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

Certain WSO2 products allow unrestricted file upload with resultant remote code execution. The attacker must use a /fileupload endpoint with a Content-Disposition directory traversal sequence to reach a directory under the web root, such as a ../../../../repository/deployment/server/webapps directory. This affects WSO2 API Manager 2.2.0 up to 4.0.0, WSO2 Identity Server 5.2.0 up to 5.11.0, WSO2 Identity Server Analytics 5.4.0, 5.4.1, 5.5.0 and 5.6.0, WSO2 Identity Server as Key Manager 5.3.0 up to 5.11.0, WSO2 Enterprise Integrator 6.2.0 up to 6.6.0, WSO2 Open Banking AM 1.4.0 up to 2.0.0 and WSO2 Open Banking KM 1.4.0, up to 2.0.0.
